Well, this comes from the Mega Manning (now Power Copying) TRS [up]. I created a subtrope called Your Defeat Means I Obtain Your Powers to put the examples of getting powers after defeating the enemy. I decided I wanted the name to be clear while we progressed with the TRS, and that it would be renamed when there was space for it's own TRS.

Many people said that the name is bad, but as I said, the name just had to be clear at that moment. Now it's going to be renamed, so please add your proposals to the crowner:

I'm also hollering so it gets attached to the thread.

...why are you making a TRS thread for something that hasn't made it out of YKTTW yet? Coming up with a good name should be something you do in the YKTTW thread.

[up]What are you talking about? This trope already exists. Haven't you read the part where I said "I created a subtrope"?

Power Transfer By Defeat?

Also, do we have a trope where someone beats a leader to get that title and power? If so, we should make sure this name doesn't confuse the two.

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

[up][up]Klingon Promotion, You Kill It, You Bought It? I can't remember how it's called now.

So this is a Sister Trope, involving superpowers of some sort. Just noting the name should help make it distinct from the others.

You Kill It You Get Its Powers is a snowclone, but is the clearest I can come up with.

Winner Seizes Powers, Victor Seizes Powers or something like that?

Couldn't we just go with some sort of Theft metaphor? Power Stealing, etc?

Rhymes with "Protracted."

Theft doesn't require defeat, and I think that would be a Sister Trope anyway.

Is there a word for the type of theft where you kill them first? Mugging, or something? I dunno...anyone got a thesaurus?

Rhymes with "Protracted."

Killing for the purpose of theft, yes. But these examples often involve honorable combat, which is an honest prize, not theft.

Those that involve both would just be overlapping examples.

You [up] two [up][up]. That has nothing to do with this trope. Please go to the Mega Manning TRS where we're talking exactly about that.

[up] Yes, but there has been another crowner for more splits, Power Theft involved, that's why I said that the discusion should be there, it's nothing else.

Bump for votes.

It seems there's a new option added that is doing quite well, but I don't think it grasps the meaning of the trope. It's about getting the powers the loser had, not just "powers". Even if the trope hasn't been read the current name Your Defeat Means I Obtain Your Powers makes that quite clear. To The Victor The Powers suggests fighting, and the winner gets the Power-Up, and it's not like that. I think this option is just asking for misuse to come rampant.

EDIT: Rereading the trope I think it's probably my fault that I didn't make that clear enough in the description, so I'll fix it so it goes according to the true meaning. As I said this was splitted from Power Copying as a subtrope. It can't be any power the one you get.

[up][up]Well still, is this trope about superpowers gained upon victory, or legal powers?

[up] Legal? I don't know what you mean with that, sorry.

This trope was splitted from Power Copying. The trope is basically "beat the enemy and you get it's power or at least a power related to him in some way". It doesn't mean the power is stolen (the original user can't use it anymore), though it can be confused if the copying happens after killing the enemy, that's why there's an explanation in the description, so people don't confuse this trope with the to be revised Power Parasite (it was decided by consensus that literal power stealing was going to be in that page).

Does that answer your question?

"Legal? I don't know what you mean with that, sorry."

Like how beating the leader of a tribe makes one the new leader.

No, that's either You Kill It, You Bought It or Klingon Promotion. Probably Klingon Promotion, if I remember right Klingon Promotion was killing on purpose to get be a leader or whatever, while the other isn't on purpose. This is about superpowers, Mega Man style (and I think this was once the only thing Mega Manning was about when it started).

Still covered by that trope, this one is about superpowers. I think defeat instead of death can apply too, in any case it doesn't fit here.

Would "Trophy Power" title work? Or something related to "trophy"?

3rd Jan '12 6:19:32 AM

Crown Description:

Your Defeat Means I Obtain Your Powers was splitted from Power Copying (formerly Mega Manning) to hold the examples where the power copying/getting happened upon defeating the enemy. When the trope was made the name only cared about it being clear, and many tropers suggested it could have a better one.
