Umm, I understand that it is just a joke, but seriously, being rich is no crime, and rich people shouldn't be dehumanised. Especially considering that, having access to the net and enough leisure to write here, most of the people on this forum are richer than two thirds of the world

If we disagree, that much, at least, we have in common

True. Even the rich will not escape the fat camps.

@Beholderess: this is true.

@Thread: continuing my comparison from earlier...I find it amusing that people feel okay railing against the Evil Tobacco Industry, shoving their harmful product to the margins of society with laws designed to protect citizens from their own choices.

But when it comes to cheap unhealthy food (which kills you just as dead on a long enough timeline, and causes just as many complications to your well-being), those same people shrug and say "it's your choice where you eat, stop being dumb about it and everything will be fine"...while burger joints pop up faster than mushrooms after a rain, and the price of food that's actually good for a body gets higher and higher.

Case in point; it was actually cheaper for DG to buy a bag of frozen chicken fingers than it was to buy chicken and breadcrumbs to do it herself. And that's the cheapest of both; if we'd wanted to get something that wasn't loaded down with all sorts of additives and chemicals, the price went up.

Re: bad jokes about the rich - you reap what you sow. The environment is one of hostility towards the wealthy for good reason, and it's entirely their fault for creating it. The benign wealthy, those who admit the flaws of the current system and want them addressed, are not lumped in with the rest when brought up specifically, and until it gets to THAT point, I wouldn't worry about it. Of course, if it does get to that point, likely there'll be nothing you can do to stop the building storm anyway.

Really? Money only has value so long as people accept it as having value. If anything, the lesser economic status of the non-rich is self-inflicted.

Additionally, being healthy is important; and weight is not nearly as important to health as it's made out to be.

However, weight is often held up as the only factor of health. Thin people who get sick are unlucky — fat people who get sick, it's their fault alone. Fat people are being given stricter and stricter standards, extremely low-calorie recommendations and stomach amputations and hours of strenuous exercise a day and are still gaining weight back and then some. This is despite more and more research saying how impossible it is to lose weight permanently.

I'm kidding about the stratification of rich/skinny and fat/poor, but it is true, they're trying to kill fat people.

@Cats: forgive the imprecision of my statement. Weight gain is not the only health condition that comes from eating unhealthy food, and I was speaking of health, not just of how fat/thin someone is.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that society is trying to kill fat people, but I agree that "it's cause ur fat hur-durr" has gone a little far...and so has the idea that if you are overweight, its solely because of poor decisions.

Loooooooool. Yeah, I'll just tell my father that money isn't real and he'll magically be able to afford to pay all his medical bills. You have a point only in the sense that people keep voting for politicians who enact retarded economic policies, and even that is tainted by the fact that our electoral system is deliberately weighted to favor the minority so they require fewer votes to enact their policies to begin with.

Want to kill fat people? Why would they? Poor people being fat gives them an easy excuse to look down on the poor as inferior. The truth is that most well-off people just don't give a damn whether the people below them live or die, regardless of all else. And that applies to more people the higher up on the totem pole you are. They don't care about you (using 'you' in a general sense) any more than you care about the average homeless person. It's not malice, it's self-interest. Like the corn subsidies, which relate to the topic at hand nicely.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

Granted, that apples to all people, not just rich. Most people don't particularly care if most other people (whom they don't personally know) live or die.

Yes, but since it applies to more people the higher up you are, power and money must come with corresponding increases in responsibility towards society - if you want a long term functioning society, that is.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

This is a lost cause anyway. The only way to keep people from being fat is to lack food or have a more labor intensive society, and if you do that you have starvation problems. It's a cache 22.

[up] As awesome as that sounds when it comes to getting rid of BAD people ruining American and the world as a whole, that is definitely NOT what I meant at all!

Please don't twist it like I want revolt/anarchy over this issue, thank you very much!

People simply need to take time out and walk around their blocks more - and put some cash toward more fruits and veggies. And please don't give me any useless excuses. I'm kind of broke - and I still find enough money/time to do these life-prolonging things.

I am a college student.

I do not own a car. I walk almost everywhere I go.

Most of my food budget goes to fruits and vegetables.

I am still a fatass.

Off to the death camp I go, because I obviously deserve it!

@ Drunk

Actually, I usually feel that the government's job is to shove long-term thinking into otherwise short-term thinking areas and fast food is one of them. I'd rather there be legislation to push up nutrition standards. But really I feel it's mostly an economics problem.

@ thread

In the US I can buy a Mc Chicken for literally a dollar. The same burger costs no less than 4-5 bucks in Canada. Why? Because we restrict the nutrition issues with our food and demand higher quality via government legislation. It's still pretty shitty (well super shitty I guess) but better than America. The main point is; poor aren't going to be gobbling that stuff down, it's expensive!

You'll find a lot of things in Canada are like that. You buy a can of beans? You'd be hard pressed to find a can of beans at a local grocery store made from anything but vegetable oil or whatnot. In the US, it's quite common (as far as I can tell) to see cans of beans made with animal fat.

Now, I don't know what the common prices of fresh vegetables are like in America but generally around here if you buy things in-season or on-sale then it's around $2/lb or less, and out of season it's $2/lb or more. Typically if you are a savvy shopper you're buying fresh veggies at around $1.39/lb or so. Fancy shoppers will be buying at around $2.50/lb.

Potatoes here in-season are about $2 for a 10 lb bag, twice the price when out of season. Potatoes are probably one of the better "grains" (I know it's considered a vegetable but it's an excellent grain replacement) as it has plenty of vitamin C compared to things such as rice.

Protein is likely the most expensive stuff and more expensive as it gets leaner. However, beans are an excellent way to avoid the high cost of meat. Likewise, if you have good Chinatowns (or any other asian grocery stores), tofu is also good. Just stir fry it with some ground beef or something and you got your tasty protein dish.

But probably the big thing is that middle class are lazy, poor have no time and those two groups make up the vast majority of the population.

I keep hearing people telling fat people, "Of course it's possible to lose weight. After all, there were no fat people in concentration camps."

I am not exaggerating.

Does anyone see anything wrong with this statement?

@Cats: of course there's something wrong with it, and that's that the person uttering that statement is six kinds of douchebag.

Whether or not it's their job is a can of worms I'm not going to open. I just find it interesting that they're doing it in one case but not another (very similar) instance. And it is an economics problem; the current economics favor dumping crap food on the vast majority of the populace over actually allowing people to eat well.

[up][up] I'm not exaggerating about what I do to try to better myself. I am also not exaggerating about the kind of hate that is spewed in fat people's direction, no matter their actual diet or level of fitness.

While people becoming fatter is a class issue, people hating fat people is society-wide.
