I'm with Mary Gentle: never put words to a character's thoughts or motives beyond what an outsider would see/ understand. (Unless I drop that for Rule of Funny.)

Hence, I try avoiding 1st person where it is at all feasible. That way, I feel each character stays self-contained enough that any contradictory actions they do would be consistent with the way people react in Real Life. As, half the time, we have to make up stories about why we acted that way after something we've done after the fact. Why not have them do that, too?

Also leaves scope for a good lier to lie to the readers as well as anybody else in-story. wink

I think Unreliable Narrator had been done to that degree, but I need a second opinion.
