How the heck does post-metal work?

If you don't like a single Frank Ocean song, you have no soul.

Like post-rock, but with metal.

Or like sludge metal, with post-rock.

Somehow you know that the time is right.

Post-metal is characterized by artiness and an often constant alteration between soft and loud dynamics inherited from post-rock. Post-metal vocals are hardcore influenced - i.e. mid-range gutturals - and there's little to no cleans; the lyrics span esoteric themes and tend to be cryptic (keeping in with the arty shtick). Minimum band member count tends to be five - standard rock band line-up and the electronics guy. Sometimes also has standout bass - see Isis, Neurosis.

Was given birth to by Godflesh and raised by Neurosis; became a "thing" after the release of Isis's Oceanic; ceased being a "thing" after 2007 and made way for black metal as the new hipster trend.

Hipsters listen to Black Metal now? Around here they mostly listen to Atmosphere.

Also: I freakin' hate mid-range guttural vocals.

They tend towards the more "artistic" black metal bands; Alcest, Altar of Plagues, etc.

Hey, a new Goatwhore album.

...Damn, it hasn't leaked yet. That teaser song is a nice piece of blackened butt rock, though.

If a bit boring.

I didn't write any of that.

Somehow this fell under my radar, but Luke Vibert (*AKA Wagon Christ*) has just hauled out his old alias released his first album as Plug since 1996.

Oh, if the name doesn't ring a bell, the 1996 Drum 'n' Bass For Papa pioneered the home listening Drill 'n' Bass sound of Squarepusher and Richard D. James Album era Aphex Twin.

The New Burial EP!!!!!

It's fully streaming, so listen. You have NO EXCUSE.

It's definitely different. I'm listening to the title track now, the drums, while still having his trademark dusty shuffle, and angry and pounding. There are also drops and wobbles, but it sounds less like Dubstep and more like old school Darkstep (*The Offshoot Of Rave Which Became D'n'B*).

The title track on that is good (nice ending). I don't think it sounds nearly as aggressive as you make it out to be though. Also he's finally revised his drum sample selection. Also ratings on RYM are over 9000.

Also new Nine Inch Nails and a series of EPs instead of an album from Down this year. Still haven't listened to anything apart from the debut from the latter...

It's more agressive than a lot of his stuff I've heard.

And I was listening in the wee hours of the morining so....

Both of those sound interesting, will check out.

Also, Chrome Police: It took me a second to get the reference in your name, but then my heart was full of joy.

The new Sleigh Bells album, Reign of Terror is pretty great. I preferred Treats but we got a "Crown on the Ground"-tier song with "Comeback Kid" and that's all I wanted, really.
