Not quite a good motive to start a thread, but the Dexter's Laboratory picture does a better job showing the trope. I say put it in.

Yeah, the Dexter's Laboratory pic is definitely better.

And as noted, the art style isn't the only problem people had with the current image; the style apparently made it difficult for some people to tell the gender of the person in the image, so that's a valid strike against it.

Because it seems to me that OOTS looks like that just 'cause the author can't draw.
Not really. Even OOTS's minimalist style takes some level of skill to draw, while the current image looks like something drawn by either a toddler or an incredibly lazy and/or stupid adult. Comparing the two is absurd.

In any case, the numerous points in favour of the Dexters Laboratory image bypass this anyway. May as well make the switch.

EDITED IN: Switch seems to have been made now anyway.

Not really. Even OOTS's minimalist drawing still implies some level of skill, while the current image looks like something drawn by either a toddler or an incredibly lazy and/or stupid adult. Comparing the two is absurd.

Again, both these statements are subjective.

Personally, I found it obvious that the person in the original picture was a girl. Anyway, I put up the Dexters Laboratory image. If anyone can think of a good caption, feel free.

[up][up][up][up] "Comparing the two is absurd."

NO IT IS NOT! Those distinctions are the same: neither is "real", both are opinions.

Regardless of whether the image on this article is replaced, regardless of the reason, regardless of the replacement, it is critical that is understood.

[up][up] Well, the one about comparing the two being absurd is subjective. However, that OOTS takes more skill to draw than the former page image is not an opinion. It's more so an assumption, really, and a fairly reasonable one at that. Still, point is, it isn't subjective. Just uncertain.

[up] ... do you have any rebuttal?

That assumption is A) false, and B) doesn't matter.

Isn't "I don't like the art style" not a valid reason to pull an image? surprised

[up][up]

A) Again, any counterargument? Is it not obvious that OOTS drawings take (relatively) more skill to draw than the former page image took?

B) It doesn't matter to this specific discussion, as a better alternative has been found, as I figured was reasonably likely to happen. It might be relevant for future reference in other discussions, though. Shouldn't we, all else being equal, aim for drawings that don't look incredibly poorly drawn?

[up][up][up] It wasn't because of the art style. It's because the new image shows the trope better. All Girls Like Ponies not A Girl Likes A Pony.

It doesn't show the trope much at all. None of the images in this thread (including the "old" one) do. It's better, though. It's slightly less wrong.

Also, as an artist, kind of: no, I am pretty sure it takes way more skill to make the Homestuck art, than the OOTS art. That sort of thing is really hard to measure, though. And it doesn't matter.

It kinda seemed like the cat guy said they didn't like the style and called it "scribbles" as a reason.

[up]Basically, the complaint about the art in the original post is unfounded, but there are other problems with the image, and a better picture got suggested. It's not ideal, but it's better than what was originally up there.

[up][up] I called it scribbles because the pic did not demonstrate much skill or effort. OOTS' drawing, while minimalist, still demonstrates (relatively) more skill than the former page image did. This, rather than the purely subjective matter of taste, was what I figured was relevant.

And if it isn't relevant, then what's to stop us from having page images like, let's say, this?

[up][up][up] Look, I don't think OOTS, Hiimdaisy, or this weird Homestuck panel took much effort to make. The amount of effort it took to make an image is irrelevant to whether the image is good at demonstrating the trope or not. And this conversation is irrelevant to the topic of this page's image.

Edit: Okay, well, I see what you mean with that hypothetical Knife Nut image. Good point.

I think Eddie or Janitor actually stated there has to be some minimum quality (unless the trope is about such drawing).

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

Ok. I really doubt a trope would be best illustrated by that image unless the trope were about crude drawings, though.

[up] The image has been replaced, but this tangent we are on now might be good for future reference with regards to the relevance of exceedingly lazy drawing to image replacement. Should it go into a different thread?
