Playing spinoffs for the music remixes

I've noticed a couple of things since I became a Gamefly member.

First, that I am spending a lot more time playing series spinoffs, since they're games I usually wouldn't bother spending money to play. This is especially true for Mario sports titles, since I rarely have enough people around for multiplayer competition and yet the games are fun for at least a few weeks.

Second, that I find myself really liking the music in them.

I've noticed this tendency for a while. One of the best things about playing Castlevania: Judgment and Castlevania: Harmony of Despair is hearing the remixes involved. While many people apparently buy games in the Mario And Sonic At The Olympics series, Sega did some downright amazing things with Mario themes in the Wii Winter version, and London 2012 brings them back and adds a few more. And everyone knows what Super Smash Bros has accomplished.

And then there's the completely unexpected reason why I am bringing this up now: Fortune Street.

I'm not a Dragon Quest fan, though I own the first game because I got it for free with Nintendo Power. Yet the things Square-Enix does with the Mario themes are still enjoyable. Better yet, some of the songs being remixed are unlikely candidates. The world 7 music of SMB 3, as short as it is. The bonus game music from SMW. The final boss music from SMW. It even has a decent rendition of the world map from DQ 1, which I am at least able to recognize.

And then I find that the last board in the Mario set takes place at Peach's Castle, and go in expecting the SM 64 theme for the area. Instead, I get... a Super Mario RPG remix. And in hindsight, considering the companies involved in making this game, I realize that nothing short of this or maybe Mario Hoops/Mario Sports Mix could successfully use music from that game, and that's why we don't hear too many official remixes of it.

I know I'm gushing, but I wanted to get that out there. Not that I think this will (or should) convince anyone who didn't want to play Fortune Street to play it.
