^^^ Best to get a working vaccine first. Remember that the horse goes before the cart.

IIRC, somebody once suggested developing a drinkable vaccine and then getting Coke or somebody to distribute.

[up] As I understand it, the problem with a consumable vaccine is that the digestive process, namely the stomach acid, destroys far more of the vaccine than is absorbed into the body whole, and possibly breaks it down into components you don't really want people consuming.

While death of millions from disease isn't fun, isn't AIDS like biggest thing slowing down population growth in certain countries?

I really hope you are not suggesting AIDS is a good thing because it is reducing population growth. That would be awful.

Of course I'm not, I'm saying that they should try(though, I suppose people who create vaccines aren't responsible for taking care of other problems, but still) fix problems in the order that doesn't lead into more problems in long run. Of course, I could be misinformed and this could be the best order.*shrugs*

Why not deal with the HIV virus first, because it has a tangible current effect and a tangible current solution and then deal with population by decreasing the disparity between rich and poor? You know how conspiracy theorists sometimes say that the government sent drugs into poor neighborhoods to keep the black man down? Yeah, that's you but with AIDS and Africa instead of drugs and ghettos.

Not really what I meant. I didn't say that they shouldn't be given the vaccine, I said that it would have been best if other problems had been fixed first. There is difference between not giving something and what should have been done.

If you want to wait until we've fixed overpopulation to cure any life-threatening diseases... I don't think we will be curing anything for a very long time.

And I really don't know how your argument is any different to saying "Just close all the hospitals and emergency services, because we have an overpopulation problem anyway and shouldn't be saving lives till we've fixed it."

Be not afraid...

I was asking what would happen if hiv/aids got cured completely, I never actually said "Don't give them vaccine". Stop interpretting me as evil D:<

Don't espouse views that are evil, then.

I didn't espouse evil views(I didn't get the poker thing though), I asked if it would mean that population issue would get worse.

I'm switch between optimist and pessimist all the time, its natural to cynical view to assume that good things will lead to equally bad things if not worse D:<

"I think we shouldn't use the vaccine because then the population will be a problem" is an evil view *

. If you don't want people to think that when they read your posts, communicate yourself clearly.

"Poker", in this sense, refers to dealing with (what are perceived) to be the biggest problems first. But even this is not a valid way of approaching your point, because HIV is a massive problem which causes a lot of suffering.

I am having a great deal of trouble having sympathy with this view.

Honestly, it might be worth just putting a lock on this thread and being done with it. It's a magnet for inflammatory opinions, sadly.

I never said it SHOULDN'T be used, I was worrying about what bad after effects it could cause. I guess I worded it badly since you guys understood it in that way.

Also, "Poker" thing is what I assumed you guys were doing .-. In my point of view, you guys perceive AIDS as biggest problem that should be fixed when there are other things that need fixing(and which fixing would help the aids problem too).

Dang it, did I word my posts really that badly? I might have typed them fast but still x-x;

It shouldn't really cause bad after effects. All it'll do is save lives and make people happier in the world. Overpopulation is a result in the massive amounts of poverty in the world and that is an entirely separate issue. Maybe if more rich people were willing to make the system stop perpetuating their finances while keeping the majority in the shit, this would not be a problem.

The wording of your posts made it very easy to interpret your stance as "They should consider not using the vaccine in Africa because of concerns of population growth."

As for if they should have fixed other things first, creating vaccinations is a complex thing that those working on them are likely specialized in researching vaccinations specifically, so the resources used on vaccination development wouldn't be the same as the resources used toward looking toward solutions to more abstract problems like population overgrowth.

Also HIV is a global issue anyway, so even beyond the problems in Africa, everywhere else in the world could also make use of the vaccine.

Also as Telos is basically saying, "overpopulation" is only really a "concern" in places because of the distribution of wealth and resources. Assistance to those in poverty and lowering the gap in resources between the very wealthy and those who are literally starving is the direction we should be heading in that regard before looking for ways to curb population growth, especially on a continent that has relatively low population density as is.

[up] Yeah, but some of the leaders in Africa have actively discouraged people from using condoms not unlike how the pope did to Catholics. Only in Africa there is far more people with AIDS so it spread like wildfire. I don't want to point blame at this point, because I don't have all the facts, but it is certainly worth considering.
