"Rey talks like she's heard quotes of the original trilogy through pop cultural osmosis."

This is a huge problem with all Star Wars media made after the OT: the characters sound like they've watched Star Wars.

Pretty much, it dosent sound much like a myth bout like a fangirl who finally is able to see the actor.

Hey, they had that village of "church of the force" people living on the planet as well. You'd think crashed ships and walkers would have data drives with info on pretty much everything in the galaxy if they have simulators...

I'm not sure how it's supposed to make sense that Jakku is simultaneously important enough to have been the staging point for whatever massive intergalactic battle left all those wrecked Imperial ships on the planet, while also being unimportant enough for Rey to have no working knowledge of recent history.

You'd think there would be First Order and/or Republic excavators out there salvaging everything. In fact, I thought that was exactly what the camp Rey works for was supposed to be.

Either way, I do really like the visual metaphor of Rey's life and job. She begins her story in the shadow of the Original Trilogy.

IIRC the last bastion of the Empire fled to Jakku precisely because they thought nobody would find them that far into the sticks. Ditto Lor San Tekka's community.

[up][up]Endor's a pretty unimportant planet but it was still the site of a massive game changing battle. Same with Hoth. I don't think Jakku being the site of a battle and then being mostly ignored is that weird.

Tattooine is also the origin of the Skywalker clan, that doesn't mean Tattooine itself is a monumentally important planet beyond just being a major planet visited in the movies. In the old EU they actually tried making Tattooine into the site of a major galactic conflict 30,000 years ago, and the resulting battle got the planet glassed and is a desert today. That stuff is fun, but there is nothing wrong with having a unimportant location just be an unimportant location.

Gettysburg was a place of no real significance until two opposing armies, maneuvering blindly, ran smack into each other there.

Tatooine's only importance to the galaxy at large is that that's where Jabba made his criminal empire. Now that he's gone, it's a pimple on the galaxy's butt. Jakku is another pimple, it was only noticed when it was popped.

Having the last major battle of an era-defining conflict in history would keep Jakku in the history books, at least. Those junkyards really ought to have like a thriving tourist trade funded by the New Republic government. "And this, ladies and gentlemen, is where we gave the Empire their final asskicking!" <raucous applause> <patriotic music plays>.

I mean, there are loads of plays around the South that are in the middle of nowhere, and were put on the map historically speaking by having a battle take place there during the Civil War. Now, if you go there, it's probably going to be a tourist trap for history buffs.

It would be kind of interesting to see like an in-universe museum exhibit of the Galactic Civil War. Instead of using the legacy of the OT for fanservice, use it to service the story. Use the legacy of the Empire's oppression to tell us something about the governments. A hardliner Imperial faction like the First Order would likely have a "South Will Rise Again!" Lost Cause attitude, a genuinely contrite Imperial faction might regard the Empire like how Germany today views the Third Reich, and the New Republic might be thumping its chest and living on past glories too much, using their past triumphs as an excuse to grow indolent. Like, if the Galactic Empire are Space Nazis, use the legacy of the Empire in the plot as a mirror on our view of World War II and its impact.

That was actually a thing in the old EU, the Empire had a museum on Coruscant that among other things glorified the Battle of Endor enough to make it look like an Imperial victory even though they lost.

Yeah, but that was just propaganda, and based on an outright lie. It's more interesting when you delve into how nations interpret the truth.

For female Jedi Masters, were they addressed as "Master" or "Mistress"?

[up][up]I'm pretty sure it was master. I know for sure they never said mistress but I can't think of a specific time they said master.

Reading Star Wars: Bloodline right now, the canon novel that takes place 5 years before TFA and focuses on Leia's political career + the origins of the First Order. It's pretty good so far.

So a definite improvement over Aftermath, then?

I don't know why people keep mentioning Aftermath over and over again as a supposedly negative example. First of all, Aftermath's not that bad of a book. The prose takes some getting used to, but it's fine. Second of all, there are plenty of great, well-written books in the new canon such as Tarkin, Lords of the Sith, Lost Stars, etc.

And yeah, Bloodline is pretty good so far, given that it's by the same author who wrote Lost Stars. It gives a good look at how the Senate of the New Republic is like and also reflects on Han and Leia's happy married life and even talks about Kylo Ren a little bit, since this book takes place before Ben Solo/Organa becomes Kylo Ren.

Why does the first photo have Han pointing the blaster at himself? Was that already Ford's opinion of Star Wars?

That first photo is a behind the scenes photo from the shooting of The Empire Strikes Back. And Harrison Ford actually likes Star Wars.
