You know, I just figured out that I misread your post. I thought you were making that "Gays will end humanity" argument.

categorical imperative: if everyone was gay we'd die out,

I'm sorry, but the categorical imperative, at least in the most well-known Kantian form, is an attempt at formulating ethics without reference to any concrete content. Any other form of it, I daresay, makes no sense at all, for reasons mentioned in a few posts on the last page.

I don't think I could "choose" to prefer men to women any more than I could "choose" to fly or walk, to be honest.

i personally don't see why the fact of choice or nature would matter— it's their right as a human being to choose how to live so long as it does not iterfere with another's ability to do the same.

I think a careful consideration of the categorical imperative allows for individuals to act as they would wish everyone would act within that same context. Consider that the other people you may wish to act as you do will necessarily do so within the limits of their individual differences. Basically: If you like to have sex with men then do so, and be sure that in Kant's ideal world it means other people who like to have sex with men will do so. (Well, if they should be so lucky.)

Just like I'm writing a book and don't expect the rest of the world to drop everything they're doing to write books, but only those with the same skills, resources and inclinations to write a book - or even more so - as I do.

I don't think any of us can truly know whether Homosexuality is a choice or nature, but I guess, either way, we must show kindness to our fellow man.

I personally lean towards most of sexuality determined by in utero factors, while the exact expression of your particular sexuality (typical straight or metrosexual? Femme lesbian or butch? Bisexual or pan? Multigendered or genderfluid?) being more affected by choice.

What I really believe, though, is that we should avoid this sort of dark magic.

I've found it particularly edifying to explain to people who don't "get" homosexuality in the following manner. Imagine homosexual sex practiced on yourself. Doesn't appeal to you, eh*? That's how they feel about het sex.

* If they find that it DOES appeal to them, then we're going down a different line of questioning, but one way or another they'll "get" homosexuality by the end of the conversation.

My old classes' opinion on homosexuality varied. "OMG, I would burn my son to death if he was gay."; "Meh."; "I don't get it..."; "But how do girls do... I... what?"; "Homosexuality? That's so gay!"; "I-I just don't understand!"; "Lesbians are hawt!"; "You guys are retarded."; "I just don't understand!"; "We stone those fuckers to death where I come from!"; "Can anyone explain? Seriously!"

This thread was unnecessarily necroed, and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere interesting.
