I saw an episode of Mew Mew Power... and now I want for 4kids to have dubbed Pretty Cure. Mew Mew Power was always mythologized as one of the worst dubs ever but I saw it right now and its actually not half bad.

Last season was wonderful. Can the show called Wonderful be wonderful?

Wonderful Precure 1: When I first heard the dog is the main character my initial thought before reading anything else was that she was a dog fairy. Nope. Just a dog. A show about a dog and her girl. Komugi sure is a cute pup who loves her human, fantasizing about being with Iroha even before any magic shenanigans. I thought Iroha was going to be the genki one, but Komugi turned that up to 11 upon transforming. Can't say much about her character yet. Iroha is the second Cure who would normally be the lead in a row, and so far she's playing the stereotypical lead stuff straight. Even has a guy who likes her. Best part of her was not accepting that her dog became a human right away, so she's a little grounded. I think I'll like cat and her girl more though. Action might look different this season if all the monsters are corrupted animals. Ed is really cute at least. First episode is carried by the novelty, but there may be something here if they commit hard to the animal premise.

I'm not a fan of the lack of action, but I have to give them credit with Komugi.

They did a good job at getting across her character with no dialogue, prior to her transformation. And her actual dialogue upon transforming, while more cognitive than an actual dog, stills seems to fit with the limited perspective that a dog would have on the world.

Can't say a necessarily agree with the direction of this show, but I can at least acknowledge that they are doing it well so far.

For my thoughts on the new season- it's well animated and cute, I like the designs and I'm looking forward to seeing what they'll do with the animal theming going forward. Komugi's transformation was rather short, I think the last season with animations this quick was healin good (though with the lack of a finisher I imagine her and Friendy will get a combo animation?).

Satoru having a crush on Iroha was a bit of a surprise but this is precure so the chances of this going anywhere are null. I'm still curious whether he and his rabbit will be a mid season cure or the rabbit will be going solo.

For negatives, it's a pity that even though I like the monster designs more than the past few seasons it seems like they're trying to avoid proper fights. I get what they're going for but when the hand to hand is a bit part of precure's uniqueness it's a bit of a pity that it looks like they'll be trying to avoid it. Also no hints so far on who our antagonists will be for the season neither in the op nor the episode. I just hope they don't waste time like with Hirogaru

[up]While it's not exactly for me, I can't blame them for taking that direction with the "fights". Given the shift in viewing habits of Precure's main demographic, the standard Precure season might be becoming a less and less viable option as time goes on. And while said demographic has always been young girls, I suspect they might catering more exclusivity to the kindergarten aged ones.

That's probably gonna result in more seasons that aren't for me as time goes on. But at the end of the day it's not like the show was ever meant for me in the first place lol.

It does what it's trying to do well enough and I'm sure the target demo will like it.

I'm not sure I'd go that far, how "young" a precure season is aiming for has always been pretty varied so immediately assuming it's going to be kiddy from now on when we just came back from a comparitively more mature season just feels like early doomposting

Even if it lacks the traditonal hand to hand I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy the first fight. Komugi deciding it was a race and chasing the monster into a corner was fun in its own right. I love my dog daughter. How fights hold up from here on out remains to be seen but with Friendy joining in episode two I suspect we'll get more traditional fights sooner rather than later. Especially since we do see their weapon in the ED. And even if they don't give us traditional hand to hand? Hopefully they can continue to make the fights fun to watch like this one's was.

If anything my bigger issue with this episode was that I felt it was spinning its wheels and dragging out Wonderful's introduction. The scenes where Komugi is alone don't have a lot of dialogue and the characterization is rather simple so far. While I can kind of understand what they're going for the pacing is still off. Hopefully it improves now that Komugi's a Cure.

Ah, so you think they're aiming for an older audience than usual. tongue

I decided to at least watch the first few episodes. I find Komugi a bit grating, but think she'll be much more popular with the target audience. It's a happy thing for her that she has a name that doesn't scream "dog." The aesthetic is cute, and I hope Iroha's parents are relevant to her on an ongoing basis.

I do like that Wonderful's initial "finisher" is "let's hug it out", which seems a good idea where the monsters are innocent beings driven by pain. And there was plenty of action in the chase to make up for the lack of direct violence.

Prediction: At least one episode's subplot will be that a child has become afraid of animals (or a type of animal) due to a bad experience and the Precures must help him or her overcome that fear and learn to love animals again.

Ironically despite Kira Kira having more action than Wonderful I loved the action sequences on the latter's first episode.

Maybe it's a red herring, but it seems that Mayu can understand what Yuki's saying (well, meowing). Hm...

As dark as it is for me to predict this, Koumugi is going to "die" at the end.

2. I was worried about Komugi and Iroha being too similar, but right now it looks like Komugi activates Iroha's responsible mode. She's trying to be as reasonable as possible, which is something. Komugi is still a little too simple for my tastes, but she was just a dog, so I don't know what I'm expecting. Apparently even Animal Town has puppies getting abandoned. Don't care about Mey Mey right now, who seems to be the main fairy. What happens in Niko Garden when the predators get hungry? This is a season where the masquerade is going to really hurt, because that's going to limit what Komugi can do and who she can talk to a lot. At least she can talk as a dog now. Hope the Garugaru encounters manage to be something more than just chases into hugs. Season is fine, but I'm just waiting for cat and her girl to join the team.

Wow this show is incredible at making Komugi feel like a human-shaped dog.
