Okay, I translated the opening:

"CURE UP↑RA♡PA☆PA!"
With these magic words…
Everything turns into a great big mess!
Throbbing◇Pounding
Exciting◇Loving
Drama Bomb!

Standing out? I don't want that!
Flying in the sky? That's really dangerous.
But I'll do it for you.
Magicians Precure!

The world is a exciting-thrilling…
…Secrets-filled Wonderland.
Together we explore & adventure
The dreams we find may be our jewelry.

When the Diamond light splashes with Ruby…
Rippling out into the Sapphire sea…
It shines Topaz dreams…
Then even miracles can occur.

It's awful! Our interests mismatch.
Our rhythm in discord, lifestyles out-of-sync.
But now I can say that:
"That difference is wonderful."

Honestly… It's super-fun!
If a dog could talk, it would be bark-tastic.
That's why we're friends◇now.
Magicians Precure!

"CURE UP↑RA♡PA☆PA!"
With these magic words…
Everything turns into a great big mess!

That This◇Which What
Cheerfully◇Fondly
Who? Who? Full Transformation!

For songs, I'm less for pure accuracy and wants more of a flow. These sorts of things tend to be more poetic anyways.

"CURE UP↑RA♡PA☆PA!" is in the name of the ending song, written just like that. Not sure if I should render it like that each time it comes up, but I think it works.

The lines I'm least sure about are the Diamond/Ruby/Sapphire/Topaz ones. The song seems to personify them, whereas I tried making them adjectives. Not sure if it works well.

I stole the bark-tastic line from another fansub. The original line is "wan-derful", "wan" being the sound of a dog's bark in Japanese.

Thoughts on this? You can compare it to other translations.

Edit: Oh yeah, I'm using Aegisub now, which appears to be better for subbing compared to pure text editing.

Why are you calling it Magicians Precure? The show already has an official English title if you don't want to call it Mahou Tsukai Precure.

I do find it interesting they hid the henshin activator in something as mundane as a standard line spellcast word. Makes me wonder if that means the school knew all along about how to trigger the precure system, or whgether its just a fragment of lost lore that the magic world forgot the conbtext to.

I kinda want to translate "mahoutsukai" consistently and I think "magician" works best overall.

Translated the ending song, CURE UP↑RA♡PA☆PA! ~The Magic that Turns into Smiles~ :

Happy! Blow it away with magic!
With the stick that gathers wonder…
And a rainbow dream jewel…
A miracle can be born!

Turn that star into candy♪
And tears into smiles♪
With an energetic invincible combination
However ahead, Be Shine☆

CURE UP↑RA♡PA☆PA!
Tomorrow, become a great day!
CURE UP↑RA♡PA☆PA!
Miracle・Magical・Jewelry-re!

CURE UP↑RA♡PA☆PA!
Ride a broom and…
Recite with your friends and everyone:
The Magic that Turns into Smiles.

CURE UP↑RA♡PA☆PA!
Miracle・Magical・Jewelry-re!
CURE UP↑RA♡PA☆PA!
Happy→Fun→Fantasy!

CURE UP↑RA♡PA☆PA!
Miracle・Magical・Jewelry-re!
Magicians Precure!
Precure!

Something I don't really have a clue in how to romanize is "Jewelry-re" or "Jeweliire". I have it how it is right now, but might there be a better way?

Also now considering maybe change "Magicians Precure" into something else for the opening and ending specifically, although that could conflict with the transformation scene. "Maho Girls Precure" would be the obvious thing to change it into.

Otherwise, any thoughts?

Just leave Maho Girls Precure as either that or Mahoutsukai Precure.

It's the official English title which make it the best title if you don't want to call it Mahou Tsukai Precure/Mahotsukai Precure!

I'm not translating the title, just the lyrics here.

And also what the characters say. I think it would be awkward to replace all instances of "Mahoutsukai" in the show with "Maho Girls"...

On another subject, any ideas for Asahina Mirai's catchphrase? 「ワクワクもんだぁ!」 is it in Japanese, it basically means "it's exciting!", but that feels like it could be a bit plain and generic.

Most team names sound ridiculous and nonsensical (Fresh Precure, Heartcatch, Smile, etc.). This one is unique in that the name isn't quite as nonsensical as it usually is. Magicians Precure is two words put together that actually imply something, which makes it sound off from the other ones. Mahotsukai/Maho Girls probably mean something similar in Japanese, but to English speakers it sounds just as nonsensical as the other series. Maho Girls is the least bad option personally.

As for Mirai's catchphrase, a good synonym for exciting might help. What are some points where it's said? It's easier to make it sound good when there's some context.

The first time she says it is before the opening in the first episode when she's describing the sky object to her mother, although in a question form asking basically "Isn't it exciting?".

The second time is after the opening after she hears about the possibility that it's a mahoutsukai after which her mother hopes Mirai would be more excited about her school work.

She says it a whole bunch throughout so I won't list it all, but you can probably listen for it. The catchphrase romanized is: "Wakuwakumon da!".

Yeah, I think you're just going to have to decide on whether you like exciting, thrilling, amazing, or whatever more. It's not like boring catchphrases are new to the series, lest we forget Ketteeei!/It's decided!

Magician sounds like someone who just does slight of hand 'magic', there is a reason why Harry Potter is called a Wizard and not Magician. Wizardess or Witches sound a lot better.

Maho just means magic so Maho Girls Precure is just Magic Girls Precure.

The title is part of the lyrics though. Translating it when used in the lyrics is still translating the title either way. That said why can't you just translate 'mahou tsukai' as witch or wizard depending on the context while in the context of Precure just either leaving it as Mahou Tsukai Precure or Maho Girls Precure? It's really not that hard.

I think there's value in being simple and consistent, which is why I want to use "magician" as the translation for "mahoutsukai". "Mahoutsukai" is a term used for both male and female magic users, as well good and evil ones in the series. Was thinking of using something a bit more obscure like "Magi" or something before, but it's important that Mirai is familiar with the stereotypes of mahoutsukai in the series, so that doesn't really work.

The Precure are legendary mahoutsukai, which somewhat makes them like an upgraded version of normal mahoutsukai and I want to keep the connection. It should also be noted that we're only two episodes into the series and we don't really know how the use of "mahoutsukai" is going to evolve. Since the word usage is consistent(they use only a single word for it, not using words like "majyo" for female), I think it would be good to be consistent in the translation as well. If I use something like "witch" and they later introduce witches as a separate concept, things can go badly.

I've though of using "Wizard" instead of "Magician", but the word feels a bit too masculine for general use to me. Tell me if you think otherwise.

Is there any indication to what the main bad guy's gender is? I'm assuming male, but I couldn't tell for certain. You referred to them as a magician like Riko, so if it's the same term for both of them witch is probably best avoided.

Wizard is too masculine.

There's been no direct mention, but the name felt vaguely masculine so I kinda assumed as such.

As for Precure team names being nonsensical, well, Princess was pretty much as straightforward as one can get. Mahoutsukai is pretty similar.

I honestly forgot about Princess Precure. That doesn't bother me at all like Magic Girls/Magicians Precure does. Maybe it's because of the redundancy? At this point I see Precure as a term for Magic Warrior, so Magicians Precure comes across as Magic User Magic Warrior to me.

Our main villain is female and described as a witch of darkness over on the show's Wikipedia page so take that as you will.

Okay and? Maho Girls Precure! and Mahou Tsukai Precure! are the official titles and should be left alone. Not only that but translating mahou tsukai as witch or wizard depending on the context fills both criteria of being simple and consistent while not making everyone sound like they're not doing real magic as translating it to magicians does.

Why is this such a hard concept to grasp? Official titles shouldn't be changed and if you want something that's simple, sounds right, and consistent than using witch and wizard depending on the gender in question fits.
