I thought that was politicians in general. Remember when Romney denied his admittance of saying the economy was fucked and/or the existence of global warming when he turned coat?

Anway, I said the EU didn't ban "European" seal products,

Well it does. I just check the EU site and it says "on 16 September 2009 the European Parliament and the Council adopted a Regulation banning the trade in seal products in the European Union. It applies to seal products produced in the EU and to imported products." so it's not like the legislation is about banning Canadian seal imports, it's just that Canada happens to do a lot of trade in seal products.

Now there are "limited exemptions to respect the fundamental economic and social interests of Inuit and other indigenous communities. It also contains exceptions for goods derived from seals for personal and non-commercial use and for goods derived from seals hunted for the sole purpose of the sustainable management of marine resources on a not-for profit basis and for non-commercial reasons.". [1]

So the lesson isn't "If you hunt for survival, go screw yourself. If you hunt just to kill stuff, good stuff." It's "If you hunt to make money, screw you, if you hunt because it's the only way you can survive or because you need to carry otu population control, then okay"

[up]Still never understood why seals get singled out among animals that get killed for fun, food and profit. Is it because they are (apparently) cute? Or is the whole clubbing thing.

[up][up]Harper's deflection puts him in a league of his own. Mulroney and Chretien were gifts compared to what Harper has gotten up to in terms of deception. And Romney just pretended to be right wing to win the primaries (or had spent his life pretending to be moderate to get elected as a Republican in Massachusetts, probably the former), it was petty and common opportunism. Harper violates the law and human rights and then pretends nothing has happened, he rarely even justifies it.

[up]It's the clubbing... but, also the fact that Europe came pretty close to losing its entire seal population across several species and in various countries at one point. <_<

They've still not entirely recovered to anything like the numbers they once had in the range they had. -_-

Several hundred years of increasingly industrialised and unregulated hunting will do that. -_-

Please, please, please be true.waii Are there more emails out there? Or is it just the ten point lead the liberals have in the polls?

While I'd rather see Harper defeated outright in an election (preferably by the one true king Trudeau, but Mulcair is acceptable) him gone is enough.

I see no verifications of those rumors, however, the same guy says that the Senate scandal may have turned Harper into a liability.

Others say the by-elections, which Trudeau won, have rattled the Tories.

Okay, this is just disgusting. It involves a ton of breaches of the law on the part of a school board, the Ontario Provincial Police and even the Legal system!

[up][up]Who else is the West going to vote for though? Another splinter party (which Harper used to be a member of?) that's more grassroots conservative, if not more right-wing? Cause they won't touch the Liberals and the NDP for the most part.

The NDP came from the prairies, and an NDP candidate won in Edmonton. Don't discount the orange when it tries to appeal to rural voters.

It's recently broke on Tumblr, and I think you can find a page for her on Facebook. Since it seems the courts will seize any money she receives from crowdfunding, the options are a pro bono lawyer or getting the attention of the Ontario Ombudsman. If this is in Wasaga Beach, I believe it's an area with a lot of tourist money coming through, so some big protests might shake things up.

It sounds like a perfect storm of awful. The Conservative Party doesn't like her very much, which caused the crazy guy at the start to become active, the school system mostly doesn't care about due process, the one judge just sounds like a moron and the police system sounds really corrupt, combined with an incompetent lawyer who hates the job he's been given.

The story is spreading and I know people who have had major problems with the OPP and the Ontario legal system, and the school systems, and I hope that it eventually leads to a backlash against them. I wish I could help the lady and her son though, but I don't know anything that could.

Well, it's not great, but I can understand why they did it. Some women are forced into prostitution and as the law stands now, they have no defense against abuse. I doubt this will make a lot more women go into prostitution because it is not a nice job.

Definitely Trudeau, according to the polls. I suspect the Liberals will roll back the Orange Tide (NDP has been stuck in 3rd for a while), especially in Quebec/Ontario. Harper's numbers have been low since the latest scandals and, unlike previous cases, are showing no signs of recovery. The Senate expenses scandal is also rubbing Harper's western base the wrong way, so there's a real risk some might stay home next election.
