It's a thing called a "talk box
" on the guitar.
That article has quite a substantial list of well-known songs it was used on. You probably are remembering it from at least one of them.

Thanksgiving came with a nostalgia trip, and we ended up playing a bunch of old songs.
Anywho, I was surprised when I first heard this song, because that opening noise...thing...sounds really familiar, but I can't place why! I don't know what it is at all. Help!
