X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

Ok if this just Cable going into the past to get certain versions of heroes regardless of their current status then its alright.

If not then once again "House of Ideas" my ass.

[up]Okay, before I say anything else, I just want to say that modern comics today do in fact... NOT suck. Yeah, I know; coming from me, that might as well sound like heresy, but I realized something. I've been reading Justice League Detroit, which was really nothing more than one big publicity stunt that went against everything the League stood for up until that point, and do you when that was made? The early 1980's. So really, all of the crap I kept on blaming modern comics for has been going on for decades now in one way or another; probably as long as comics have been around really. So, yeah; it sucks, but that's just how it is, and if you like comics, it's just something you have to put up with. And I guess I'll just have to put up with it too.

All of that said, the House of Ideas is still running out of ideas. A sudden epiphany ain't gonna change that. What they need to do is go back to the drawing board, because after Captain Nazi and now Legacy, they really need to turn themselves back into an actual House of Ideas.

I'd guess there's probably always been about the same amount of bad comics, it's just that with the rise of the internet we now have the means to discuss them en masse and ensure nobody forgets them.

I contend that a lot of comics from the much vaunted Silver Age that we keep aspiring to go back to are nigh unreadable garbage.

[up] I find Silver-through-Early Bronze Age dialogue nigh-impenetrable for the most part. Stop explaining what your powers are! Show don't tell!

I got into comics around the time the New 52 started.

I suffer from no nostalgia.

[up]Well, have you thought about getting some nostalgia? As in, going back and reading the classics? There's a lot of great stuff out there that still holds up today, and there's nothing wrong with checking some of it out. And to get this roughly back on topic, the Claremont X-Men run is a must.

Man, if WolverJean gets canonized, that'll be like the ultimate proof the '10s are the decade from Hell, won't it? Trump, ISIS, hurricanes up the wazoo, all the cool celebrities dying while those goddamn Kardashians live on, and now WolverJean. Give me the '90s back.

So I finished up Operation Zero Tolerance.

It is pretty darn good, much to my surprise. It's not perfect by any means but it's one of the better X-events I've read. Each ongoing has a clear defined conflict to deal with, no one is out of character, and best of all the X-Men get to be superheroes instead of argumentative murderous assholes, to the point where the finale of Wolverine's story arc in the series is him trying to save one of the turned Prime Sentinels with words and succeeding.

Cece Reyes is a goddamn treasure, and the storyline does the impossible in making Iceman cool, plus he spends most of it nearly naked so that's a plus.

The Generation X issues with Jubilee in captivity are the high point (though it's a shame Chris Bachalo swapped art styles around this time since his original artstyle is so much better), and it's probably Jubilee at her most badass as she constantly throws shit in Bastion's face.

And it even introduces us to my favourite D-List mutant, Maggott!

And if you didn't know how he died, he was executed in a Canadian mutant death camp (yes, really) in the terrible 2000s Weapon X series alongside a whole mess of other unfortunate '90s characters.

Canada is the root of all evil.

They tried to kill off Cece Reyes there too, but she is far too awesome to die there.

That's not our fault! Those Weapon X guys went off the rails.

I mean, yeah, we gave the world Wolverine too, but we're gonna make mistakes.

We don't hold the Kardashians against you guys do we?

Honestly, even with Weapon X in their ledger, Marvel Canada still doesn't seem nearly as awful as Marvel USA or fictional nations like Attilan and Atlantis. Marvel USA has the Sentinnel program and Norman Osborn running HAMMER and the Attilan and Atlantis are xenophobic aggressors.

The weird thing about Marvel Canada is just how fucked-up all the heroes are. Logan, obviously, and Deadpool. Northstar's an asshole, and Aurora's usually kind of an asshole, too. Heather Hudson was almost as big a fan of just killing people as Punisher, back in the '80s. Puck's a scrapper with an attitude, like a shorter Wolverine without claws. Sasquatch has always had prick tendencies. Talisman's arrogant and condescending.

The most Canadian hero from Marvel is Major Mapleleaf. I will never stop missing that incarnation of the team.

Shaman's a nice guy, Marrina was very nice until she got a punk make-over (which also made her awesome), but for the most part, Canadian heroes can be real jerks. And it's weird.

Where's the Canadian hero whose first instinct in every situation is to apologize? Or the one who uses unflagging politeness as a mask for passive-aggressive barbs? The heroes who truly represent what it means to be Canadian.

This doesn't sound any different from 90% of Marvel heroes no matter which country their from. The biggest jerkasses in the MU are Xavier, Emma (while she was still a hero), white Nick Fury, Tony Stark, Steve Rogers under certain writers like Warren Ellis and Mark Millar, Reed Richards and Clint Barton.

Just re-read X-Men '92.

Ugh, I'm depressed about its cancellation all over again. The original mini was perfect in every way, did absolutely everything right, and while the ongoing had its issues it was still the best X-Book on the stands when it came out.

It was the closest we'd ever get to a return of a real X-Men book

[up] By the standards of the time? Yes, it really was that bad.

Now, after we've had hundreds of event comics? Eh, it's still bad, but more generically bad, like Maximum Carnage, or Secret War 1.
