Fancy dress, crown, jewels, gloves, sitting in a throne; This pic looks like a princess. Only one sentence in the description talks about her being upper class and it is immediately contradicted by the following sentence saying that lower class women can also be proper ladies. I say we find something more modest. It can still be an upper class lady as long as she isn't dressed up like this one. The description also says that her 'gentle smile' is more important than her 'personal looks' so something along those lines would be preferable

Agreed that that's non-illustrative and possibly misleading. How about Marmee from Little Women?

Well I put the pic up, but I admit I went by the name more than the description, which I thought meant someone who basically was a paragon of what a high class lady was supposed to be.

Motion to pull

I'll see if I can find a better page for it.

EDIT: Wait. Do we have a trope for what I mentioned above?

Support pull. It shows what appears to be a proper lady, but doesn't show the character aspect of it.

I suggest Melanie Wilkes.

[up] That's the same problem as the current pic; it only shows a dressed up lady, not the character aspect. I much prefer Madrugada's suggestion. It looks to be a family setting with some kind of decision making going on.

Maddy's doesn't QUITE do it for me, but I see your point. We should avoid anyone too elaborate to avert confusion. That said, how about Jane Bennet?

Look for scene shots, not portraits. A headshot or portrait isn't going to really show the characterization aspect at all. It will just show "well-dressed, attractive lady"

The current one is the best of those proposed so far.

The person pictured has a very straight back, sitting upright and a prim and proper expression.

That said it's still a weak picture and could be misleading.

[up] That's what I'm talking about. A pic like the current one would be good but this one looks like a princess. What would be perfect would be to combine what you say about the posture with what Madrugada said about 'not just a welldressed lady'

Um, the description implies something that can't really be illustrated (a woman who is a combination of all the virtues a lady is supposed to have), at least not in a single frame, or without dialog.

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

A good point. The trope involves being more than 'doing'' which is hard to illustrate. I just had an idea. You know that 'balance a book on your head' thing in fiction? What if we used something like that? Like a Grand Dame character followed by a younger lady? A 'teaching to be proper' kind of theme to the pic.

Here's what I've found

Teen girls with books

young girls with books

girl courtesy No books here but it was on the same site.

I also have this but there a problem here. It may have the same problems as the current pic with the princessy thing. However, I did get premission from the artist to use it so that's not a problem. Just gotta give them credit.

This thread has been going for one month and interest seems to be drying up so I created an image pickin' crowner here.

If you're going to make a crowner, please include all the options, not just the ones you like.

I've added the rest that have been suggested.

[up] I understand what you're saying but that was not my intention. You're the one that said we should be looking for more than a 'well dressed attractive lady'. I suggested the 'balance a book on your head' idea back in November and waited almost three weeks for feedback. The only feedback was positive so they are the ones I added.

Bump for more votes, unless we want to just call this an "Image Links for pics" page and move on.

Eeeeeyeah, definitely. I'll set up the Image Links page at some point today, unless someone wants to take care of it sooner and PM me to close the crowner and thread.

I'm the OP so I'll do it.

Done. I think we can all agree that being 'well dressed/attractive' is not enough to qualify for this trope so I didn't add every image from the crowner. Proper Lady is more about behavior than apperance so I looked for some activity like tea party or courtesy.
