Laconic: "Technology from Magic"

Page image:
Just one of the many sights of Eberron.

Suggestion: I am ordinarily very lax when it comes to page images, but for this once I lean strongly towards pulling—for three reasons:

  1. It looks vastly more magical and has very little hints of it being applied as what we'd conventionally recognise as technology.
  2. It shouldn't be that hard to look for an improvement as it is a widely used trope.
  3. I recall it might have had a different page image, but I may be wrong. There is however no IP tag in the source code.

And while we're at it, as an aside:

  1. It has one of those annoying self-promoting captions that don't seem to serve the trope as much as the works they link to.
  2. It has two page quotes.

Discuss.

I see that the current image was decided after a 177-post-long thread and a crowner. First step would be to see how your concerns got handled the last time around.

Ah. There's no tag though, couldn't trace it back there.

Reading it.

Looks fine to me. I'm going to say Keep Until Better Image Suggested on this one.

And this is speaking as someone who finds the source it's from pretty annoying, FWIW.

Well then let's look for something else then, even though we're leaving the current one up there.

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

Well, no tags.

Do you have any mental image of an ideal picture?

In the meantime, maybe we should handle the minor issues and clock it to avoid overloading the subforum.

The main problem we saw last time is that everyone has an "ideal" view, and they don't all match. That was the closest we got we general consensus.

Heck, look at the crowner and its 13 suggestions.

Yeah, I think some also suggested repairing the trope. Was there any action taken or is that another can of worms?

At any rate, on the minor issues, can we get the caption to help something? It does nothing but promoting the work pictured.

And I changed my mind about the quotes, they seem to be a single package, though I don't know the official stance on this.

I hate doing a double picture when it is not absolutely needed but

Top: Airliner made through technology. Bottom: Airliner made through magic.

I actually like that very much, but let's hear others first.

My main issue was it's not immediately clear what it is and I could only get the meaning (vaguely) through the aesthetics. If we can make it clear what it is (i.e. an airplane propelled by a fire-gate-magic-thing) it's all right.

At the very least (that is, keeping the image and changing only the caption) I think we should go with something like "The leading fire-elemental-trapped-in-a-ring-based airliner."

change the caption to "The magical counterpart of a modern day airliner" then?

Hm. From the previous discussion, I'm rather partial to the lightning rail. You can generally tell it's intended to be a locomotive and train station, but it's powered by magical blue-energy lightning thingies.

We also should use the caption to aid that one methinks.

Except most people tent to associate lightnings with electrical power (and thus technology), and the magic in that picture is clearly electrical in nature... What is wrong with the current picture anyway?
