Well as long as you do not believe that there is actual fire and what not in hell and only a subjective emotional state, it may not be that bad.

Believe it or not, this actually is the state of Hell, canonically speaking. The idea of a fire & brimstone Hell comes from one or two lines of the Bible which, if I'm remembering correctly, only mentions a lake of eternal fire. I don't have the lines handy; I'm not that much of a religious nerd.

Dante popularized the idea of a fire & brimstone Hell with his Divine Comedy, though I don't think he made it. The general idea was that it was an idea created (or embellished) by the church, for scare and shock & awe tactics concerning believers.

That being said, Hell is still pretty horrible. Imagine knowing about a cool party, where everyone you love and care for (and who also love and care for you in equal measure) are invited. Except for you. And you're not allowed in. But you can hear how great it is. Don't run too far with that metaphor please, but that's the general idea. So taking that the Christian theology is real and all that, you find yourself dead. You now know, for a fact, that Heaven exists, as does God and all that. You're shown its splendor and glory. You're shown paradise eternal. Then denied paradise eternally.

That's gotta' suck.

I can't help but think that if I was allowed into Heaven, but those who I loved and who loved me weren't, I'd want to go to Hell instead.

Objectively? No such thing.

Subjectively? That's up for the individual to decide.

[up][up]If that happened to me, I'd throw a party with whatever friends I'll make in Hell.

In a lot of theological debates in this forum, I see theists saying that Hell isn't for the virtuous unbaptised, or even for people who break smaller rules, but for the 'truly wicked'. What does this mean? Who are considered the 'truly wicked'?

Would probably depend on which "theist" you are talking to.

In Catholicism, Hell is for those who rejected God, who is all-goodness and love. Any "rule" which concerns grave matter, when broken with full knowledge and consent , can be considered a rejection of God. I think its sort of simplistic to think of them like "rules" though.
