I have to write a short presentation for my German class about the types of music commonly listened to in Germany. I'll have a look on Wikipedia and the internet and so forth, but I figure talking to actual German people is going to be more helpful. So would anyone be able to tell me a little about what (predominantly young) people tend to listen to, especially: which genres are most common, which bands are especially notable, and how much/what English-language music people tend to listen to. I would be much obliged.

I would really like to help, but I got in fact no clue myself as I'm probably not typical - and not that young :/

I'm not German, so take this with a grain of salt, but:

My best friend and I recently spent two weeks in Germany. We were excited about experiencing a different culture.

Unfortunately, we literally had to ask proprietors wherever we were to play German music. Go to a bar? American music. Go to a hotel lobby? American music. Fast food joint? American music. WAY more than 50% of the music we heard was American. I wasn't paying a lot of attention to what we heard but some hip-hop and other genres commonly associated with adolescents in the U.S. was the bulk of what I was hearing.

That is not an exaggeration - less than half (I'd probably say less than a quarter, only doubting that because we'd ask to listen to specifically German music) of the music we heard was German.

Rap is very popular here. There is actually a lot of German stuff, but American rap is popular too.

Other than that I'm not sure what many people here listen to.

People aren't as awful as the internet makes them out to be.

I believe there's a German music video made by some heavy metal group that actually pokes fun at this issue... can't remember it, but involved some dudes singing on the moon in astronaut suits, and it was in German, that's for sure!

EDIT: Aha, found it! Glory to the power of the internets and really vague descriptions!!!

Bah, can't seem to create a vid for the life of me, I'll just link it the old fashioned way:

Well, I'd say that if you are listening to the average radio channel here (if not specially playing Schlager, Volksmusik, etc.), around 95% of the songs would be in English.

Regarding the types of music, I'd also say nothing special: Pop music dominantly, followed by Rock, Hip-Hop, Rap, bit of Metal and maybe Punk here and there? (I'm not that much into music either.)

[up][up] We All Live in America (Yep, it's a Trope Namer) is not only about music, but the process and criticism of Americanisation in general.

[up][up][up][up][up]That's a generous estimation. The vast majority of all music played here is English, and most of that in turn comes imported from the USA.

What exactly, though - ah yes, I'm not really keeping up with that, heh.

In other words, most of what you'd hear is the same as on BFBS (which I'm sure gets German listeners)?

While most of the music is in English there's also alot from Europe. The Eurovision song contest winners are usually part of the charts or other European bands. (I think Skandinavian Rock/Pop was trending last I check) German music in English is also heard very often. There's loads of musician that come from Germany but sing English(though the pendulum does swing back once in a while.) So, German charts are not a copy of the American with some German titles. On the whole, I think rap is less popular than rock/pop genres, though r&b has become an interesting factor... (But don't take my word for it, I may be in the right age bracket but I'm pretty much sworn to metal...)
