[up]That's exactly my problem with the image. The censorship displayed in the image is more vague than the trope's actual definition. The trope isn't isn't "Alcohol gets censored", it's "alcohol gets censored by disguising it as a non-alcoholic beverage". The picture currently conveys the former rather than the latter.

And being the trope namer has no affect on whether it's a good picture or not.

Also against the current image. Even the caption (I don't care if it's in the image, it's still a caption) doesn't make clear what kind of censorship is happening.

@Japanese: I agree. The crossed-out mug only shows Censorship in general, not the specific kind described by the trope.

The name of the bloody card is "Frothy Mugs of Water".
Merely saying the trope name does not make a good page image — in fact, half the time images which do that are Just A Trope Namer And A Caption.

You guys really need to look at the picture in it's entirety, because the complaints I've heard so far are about parts of the trope that are not shown, say, in the caption, but are otherwise covered by the card name, or things that are not shown in the image, but are referred in the card caption, and so fort. The name of the card, plus the image, plus the card caption shows painfully well what the card's talking about. Each bit taken apart on it's own, yeah, they wouldn't work, but togheter, they do.

At any rate, this will go on for a while if we just keep bitching back and fort, so I'd say the best course of action is to put up a crowner and see what the majority thinks (hoping in little sock-on-sock action). In the meantime, there's that pic I've posted a while back if someone wanna start working on a possible replacement.

Not liking the current image. Except for the trope name, nothing else about the card relates directly to the trope.

The image shows a red X, nothing to do with the trope.

The fluff only mentions general censorship. Again, not this trope.

The gameplay effects mean nothing to us.

It's always been an IP rule we should not have a trading card as page image unless the text on it relates to the trope. In this case it does not. It's simply about censorship in general.

The name of the card, plus the image, plus the card caption shows painfully well what the card's talking about.

If you have to look at three things to figure out what the card is talking about, it is not shown well.

[up]Going by that reasoning, we should pull several multipanel/comics images from the site then. Can we have that crowner please?

[up][up] Illustration is holistic. An image can be more than the sum of its parts; this is not only permissible but, I would argue, desirable.

That said, I would prefer an image that shows the trope more accurately, as the current one seems to illustrate a broader form of censorship—this trope is a little more specific. A before/after pic like [1] seems fine.

[up][up]Multipanel images tell a story. And say exactly what the trope is about. The card just says the trope name and alludes to censorship.

I like the before and after because it's crappily edited into milk.

Personally I think the after picture alone could work. The edit is pretty blatant on its own.

I think the literal mug of water fails to demonstrate the trope since it doesn't actually show an act of censorship — unlike putting an X over the mug.

If you want to go with an edited image, why not just use the original blue mug of beer from the Ocean dub of DBZ that inspired the card that inspired the trope name?

(I've put that suggestion in the Crowners list, but that's my best effort at recovering from accidentally clicking the wrong button when trying to post. If someone else has an objection to me adding that to the crowner options, please delete it or tell me how to delete it, since I couldn't figure out any other way to repair the mistake. In the mean time, I'm trying to get my hands on such an image myself.)

There's no problem in adding a suggestion to the crowner, but include a link to the image. we can't judge something we can't see. (You can edit the entry)

Found the original.

Since it's about censorship of drugs, there's also the vanishing cigarette from DBZ

Oh, thank God, I was starting to think my memory was playing tricks on me.

I ended up downloading both the Ocean and Funimation dubs, and both of them had beer-colored beer. (Of course, the only Ocean copies I could find had the remastered first season. I couldn't find the original broadcast episodes.)

Yeah, that one's got my vote:

  1. It's the partial Trope Namer. (Well, the inspiration for the Trope Namer, anyway.)
  2. It illustrates the trope perfectly in a single image.

As an alternate, since cigaretters were brought up, I can't resist posting Sanji's lollypop from the Korean One Piece:

Because that is exactly how lollypops are held.

That's absolutely hilarious. But I think the "before and after" image is clearer still.

If you're going to do a before and after, I think it's important to use the original edit to blue since it is the trope namer.

Using the milk edit might give people the wrong impression that it was actually edited to milk in the broadcast versions and not just here on TV Tropes.
