Seems odd he haves it so Homer caves in and realises he should go to church (granted that kinda bites them on the back in the end *SNNOOOORRREE*).
Actually I have a soft spot for No Disgrace Like Home, since it was the first episode aired on BBC (and thus first I watched). It was also kinda interesting to see Homer play The Straight Man for once. I wish they toyed with that a bit in some later episodes, it might have toned down the aforementioned problem.
Homer the Heretic wasn't all that good an episode, but it was great satire of all those Fundie's that think like that. The ending was the only real problem.
And actually the World Of Warcraft episode had Homer and Bart as the Closer to Earth people for once. Homer rightfully gave Lisa the red card for breaking all those soccer rules, and Bart unintentionally killed Marge and really didn't take it seriously. Meanwhile Lisa got on Homer's case for all those cards and Marge punished Bart for killing her character,...after she messed with Bart's stuff in-game.
It was still a pitiful episode thanks to the whole lack of humor and emotionlessness, but it was nice to put the Flanderized Lisa in her place.
Luminous beings are we, not this crude matterI think it was Flanders' hamminess that made "Homer The Heretic" funny. Regardless of the episode's subject matter, gags such as the house fire were hilarious.
I thought Mother Simpson was kinda mediocre though, it did have heartwarming moments, but the whole "dead relative isn't actually dead" concept seemed awkwardly done (rare are times it isn't) and some of the lamer gags wreaked the tone. The recon also managed to make Abe look like even more of an ass of a father to Homer.
Is that the one where Mona takes over the prison bus and pushes Homer into a valley of thorns? Because that was a good episode, and probably a stand out in this decade of mediocre/bad seasons/two good seasons.
In fact I just love the Mona episodes in general.
Luminous beings are we, not this crude matterUnderrated: "Bart on the Road" is still one of my favorite episodes. Doesn't really seem as liked as others.
Overrated: I don't mean to sound smug saying this, but I didn't find "Marge vs the Monorail" all that great. A couple funny lines but it's not in my top ten or anything.
"Bart on the Road" was my favorite for that season, but I never thought it was underrated,..everyone I knew loved that episode. Maybe they didn't talk about it,but once in a while the plot would be mentioned.
"Lisa the Vegetarian" is definitely overrated though, and while it was fairly good, the Mc Cartney part Foreshadowed the next few seasons and it was the beginning of Lisa's Flanderization when at the time it was Character Development.
Luminous beings are we, not this crude matterOverrated: "The Simpsons 138th Episode Spectacular" Another meaningless clip show instead of anything original. Troy Mc Clure was a nice highlight and the part where's Smithers and Burns is *addressed*. But really the novelty has kind of warn off by this point.
Underrated: " A Star is Born-Again" This episode really makes the death of Maude worth something,it had all the sentiment the earlier seasons had.Really made Flanders The Woobie and dealt with an issue "I'm Goin' To Praiseland" did half-heartedly.
Luminous beings are we, not this crude matterThere's nothing worse than an internet debate where both sides are wrong. Emperordaien, your intepretation of "Homer the Heretic" is completely off. Buscemi, how does the fact that the writer is a "devout atheist" (duh!) make it okay to smear religion?
As for the episode. It honestly didn't offend me, and I am a Christian myself. It's forgettable though. Very forgettable.
On-topic: "Simple Simpson" (the Pie-Man episode) is very overrated. It's basically just 22 minutes of dumb slapstick with no real point to it. And yes, the "Easy to believe tales" joke did offend me. "See Homer Run" is very underrated. People hate it because Homer is mean to Lisa in the first act but he doesn't mean it and he does his best to make up for her after that. Also, it's hilarious. The bit with the fridge magnet, Milhouse getting run over by a train offscreen, "the day the policeman came to my soccer game"... All great jokes, just to name a few.
Much of the episode was focused around writer George Meyer's problems with religion and why he isn't religious.
