General thread for anyone who doesn't know what to trade in if they're having problems choosing games.

As for me...

Is your Orange Box copy for PC?

If it's for a console, trade it in.

Wouldn't selling it on amazon be a better deal?

Yeah, if you trade something in at Gamestop or wherever, you get a certain fraction of what it's worth, so they can then mark it up to the appropriate price (or slightly more) to sell.

If you actually sell it, you get what it's worth.

But who's gonna buy my stuff on time so that I can pre-order Generations? And don't I need to pay to sell my stuff first?

The upfront cost to list is not much.

And trade-ins are utter rip offs. They give you $10 or more likely $5, then put it back up on the shelf for $30. Just sell them yourself if you're desperate.

Sell them on eBay or similar. Only trade them in if you're happy being ripped off.

If you're in Canada or the States, the Amazon Marketplace isn't bad.

Trade-ins are rip-offs? Speak for yourself. Last month I went to Gamestop and traded in thirty or so games I don't play anymore and got almost a hundred and fifty dollars. That's almost enough for my 3DS!`

...

Actually, compared to the thousands I probably spent on those thirty or so games, it does seem like a rip-off. But, whatever. I don't have the time or the know-how to sell stuff online, and I'm happy with what I got.

Gamestop is the equivalent of trading in raw diamond and in return getting 5 Mexican pesos. I once traded in a crapload of games for fallout 3 goty and dead rising 2. i thought by adding up there preowned values id have enough for both, but turns out i can only get 30 bucks out of them. yeah its a ripoff.

HMV here is a lot better. While not as good as ebay probably, they give you a lot more.

eBaying baffles me. I'd do it if I wasn't so easily confused, I have a hundreds of useless DV Ds and the money would be nice....can't trade them in. I do give in games to HMV though, I'm growing out of games (mainly for time reasons, but also because of money. And the fact I didn't realize SNES Roms are so easy to install. I have wasted so much money.) but can't get over reading them.

It all boils down to whether you want your money immediately or if you're willing to buckle down and wait, most likely getting more money in the process.

No, because I suspect the developers make very little if anything at all from my (now regrettable) purchase of, say, Chrono Trigger DS. It's just a minuscule spec in Capcom's executive's coffers. I'd never pirate a new or Indie game though, or really anything that's not pathetically easy to get. It's actually pretty hard to, at least for me...

Maybe my suspicions are wrong, but I'm not buying overpriced tiny little decades old RO Ms anymore, anyway. Oh well, water under the bridge and at least it was portable, though really I play my DS inside all the time. I traded in a PS 3 I won for most of the cost towards a 3DS, because we already had a PS 3 and I couldn't get anyone to buy it. Which in retrospect means I really gave more money for the 3DS then the now reduced launch price. I'm now selling the 3DS for everything I spent on it, I now no longer want to play DS games, too overpriced and bad value.

Anyway, UK/Irish people: if you don't want to ebay, try HMV. They have good deals for trade-ins.

Whoops. Square Enix, I mean. That was the result of editing down some examples, specifically Ghost Trick. Which while great was short and I only bought it full price because of the (later invalidated) belief it wouldn't be on the shelves long. Most of the money goes to HMV and to the shipping company, and the packaging company etc.
