I've actually done a complete 180 on my stance for guns, personally. I oppose banning any bullet-firing weapon (explosives are another matter entirely...), but I support requiring registration for all of them...

I'm fine with people having guns if theyre responsible with them.

But these guys are pretty much NOT helping the cause for convincing gun control advocates they arent fringe lunatics who need to be kept away from guns at all costs.

I'm sorry. when your response to Democratic political figures siding with allowing you to exercise your right to firearms with "it must be a secret plot to take our guns away!" you have reached that special point I like to call "bugnut fucking insane"

I suppose it depends on exposure. If PETA suddenly said that it's cool to eat meat, you'd suspect something was up. Or I would. But I'm paranoid.

This guy is the vice president of the NRA, and he's publicly displaying a persecution complex that's totally detached from reality as we know it. Guys, I'm calling it now - if this is what the NRA has to bring to bear in their high-end officials, they ARE the right wing equivalent of PETA: an organization with ostensibly sympathetic and understandable goals that has been hijacked by crazy people.

I will be taking 'right to bear arms' discussions a little more flippantly in the future.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

They've actually crossed that point a long time ago.

And I'm at the same point as USAF. Banning is meh. But register, and more importantly, responsibility. If you don't look after your gun and it's used in an accident or something, you should be held responsible to some degree.

The NRA of course, opposes these things, so yes. They are the equivalent to PETA.

[up] This. Accountability.

NRA = PETA, Environmentalists = Religious Right, and Corporations = Unions. Well, there's the Right and Left categorized and made into an equivalency...

When I heard about the 'sinister plan' I thought the NRA sounded like a group that always needs an opponent - someone to unify them in their hate and fear. Alternatively it's just a case of giving them what they want only spurring them on to aggressively demanding lots more. Many pressure groups are like that, after all it's what they're paid to do.

Its not exactly that so much as the NRA wouldn t have many people interested in signing up if they werent kept in constant terror that the big bad libruls want to outlaw the very word Gun, let alone the ownership of one.

The fact liberals in fact have allowed relaxation of gun control to a degree basiclaly kills their entire narratuive without going up to paranoia 11

One thing I should point out:

Gun control for non-urban liberals fell entirely off the radar with Bowling for Columbine, which of course was originally intended to be anti-gun, but instead resulted in a message that guns were really not the problem, but the "gun mania" was a symptom of much larger cultural issues.

Bleh... I just decided that banning guns is pointless because criminals (duh) are just going to ignore it, and then we're just shafting normal people. Easier to just get the criminals for not having a license anyhow...

Bowling For Columbine is on my to-see list. Is it any good?

even then. Gun Control isnt really that big a goddamn issue compared to other shit we liberals care about more like censorship or abortion rights,

I liked it, mainly because you really see the shift from being about gun control to being about fear.

[up][up][up]If only outlaws have guns, anyone with a gun is immediately identifiable as an outlaw.

...But more seriously, my position about banning guns (from a French guy where guns have "always" been banned) is "it should have been done long ago, but now it's too late". I think most people should never be allowed near a gun, and on top of the list I place those who desperately want one.

paranoid fear, at that. Its funny because the sheer insanity of what theyre saying makes them look exactly like the sort of nutcases not even sane gun advocates would want owning a gun.

There are better ways to change a democratic society than revolutions. I agree with Medinoc that it should have been done ages ago but that it's a bit too late now.

Guns don't kill people, bullets do.

It's cliched but true, we should let anybody own any firearm they want, but make it very hard for civilians to get ammo besides target shooting and hunting calibers.

You can almost hear the sub-text. "We spent the entire election season declaring Obama against guns, now we're fucked, message wise."

EDIT: Bowling for columbine is interesting but take EVERYTHING with a grain of salt. The interview with Heston especially, I swear that thing was completely changed from how it actually went. From someone whose culture is very neutral about fire arms I can say it was actually really scary.

This better not happen. I happen to enjoy firing guns at a range, and someone to tell me I can't own some guns to shoot at a gun range in my spare time just because some assholes do bad things with them is bullshit.

It's like banning cars because people run other people over with them.

I'm pretty sure the NRA gave Gabrielle Giffords (to give an example) a very poor rating simply because she is a Democrat, despite her pro-gun stance.

Yeah, here we go.
