In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that Insite cannot be shut down by the Tory government.

"Insite saves lives. Its benefits have been proven. There has been no discernable negative impact on the public safety and health objectives of Canada during its eight years of operation," the ruling said, written by chief justice Beverly Mc Lachlin.

The Tories argued that the government should not be in the business of allowing drugs to be taken. Harper had previously stated that he believed that "harm reduction" in health policy did not include providing safe sites for drug use, but rather for the government to levy harsh penalties against those taking/selling/buying drugs.

The government has lost the case, so it's now likely for Victoria and Toronto to go ahead with copying Insite in their own cities.

Insite has been shown to have a significant reduction in local crime, a 30% increase in people going into rehab, and 35% decrease in OD deaths (compared to 9% decrease in the city overall).

I would like to believe that these demonstrable numbers would have an impact on the War of Drugs down here in America, but somehow I don't think people will get their minds off the economy long enough to begin to care about anything else. Still, is a very nice little silver lining in these cloudy days!

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

Legal drug injection sites exist in parts of Europe (Switzerland, Frankfurt here in Germany) since the 90s, with always proven positive results, and yet it doesn't seem to have any result on drug politics in general, or the US 'War on Drugs' in particular...

Europe is derided under the 'socialism'... is it a meme? Whatever it is when people kneejerk 'LOLSOCIALISM' and turn their brains off. But you can't do that with Canada, it's too close to home and too obviously Not That Different From America (not meaning that in a bad way). Americans like Canada. They may not take Canada seriously, but they LIKE Canada. It's where they say they'll move whenever a president they don't like gets into office. So if I hold out even vague theoretical hope of reform leaking south, it's because of that.

This event also amuses me for being kind of the opposite of what we're dealing with in America. America has a majority rightwing SC and a... let's say mildly left president. Canada? For this issue, at least, it went t'other way 'round!

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.
