Digimon Video Games

I'm playing Cyber Sleuth and I find myself looking at the Digimon wiki to see what all those In-Training Digimon actually Digivolve into.

Right as my Unimon started to get good stats he died. :( Now I have a Yuramon/Tanemon.

I just beat Digimon World with the help of the freebie Monzaemon, Megalo Spark, tons of recover floppies, and 2 stat-boosting moves! My inner child is screaming in celebration right now. I haven't felt this accomplished since beating Monster Rancher 2 or Lunar 2 Eternal Blue!

Digimon world, one of the few games ever where spamming items to win is actually rewarding.

Digimon Survive will release in the West.

Yaaaaaaaay. In 2019 probably.

Well, yeah. That's when it comes out in Japan.

Listing everything habu has said about the game (or at least what was translated so far), it seems like a dream come true for many people, at least if the execution doesn't fall short:

Digimon survive is an adventure/simulation RPG, the story is about a group of boys and girls who wander into a different world and with the help of monsters they meet there, they battle fierce enemies in order to return home.

The choices you make in the game will determine your monster's evolution, this is to depict the bond you have with your digimon, much like what you see in the anime and v-tamer, rather than the usual evolution system.

Habu said he wanted to try making this game after being inspired from his talks with director kakudou and the director's involvement in the digimon anime. Rather than the cyberpunk/SF atmosphere from cyber sleuth and hacker's memory, the atmosphere of the world is supposed to give you the impression that it's fleeting and nostalgic.

The game premise is that a group of boys and girls participate in a camp involving fieldwork, but when they come upon the ruins of a temple, they're spirited away into a different world.

Habu admits that he took the camp image from adventure, but the story is way different. If Adventure 01 is Two Years' Vacation (a child friendly book about kids going on adventures), then Digimon Survive is Lord of the Flies.

Digimon survive puts emphasis on the fact that dangerous digimon can kill you, so it's a game about having to survive and live in a strange world, or die trying. If you make the wrong choice in the game, you can also die. Habu wants to make it very clear that SEVERAL CHARACTERS WILL DIE IN THIS GAME depending on the choices made.

The game is divided into Drama and Battle parts. In the Drama parts, you make decisions for your survival and search your surroundings. Depending on who you talk to and meet, and what events you see, there will be different endings.

The Battle part is a turn based, with digimon being able to evolve during battle. They also plan to add mechanics, such as calling out & antagonizing enemies to regain energy. Characters are made into 2D, rather than 3D, to "fit the worldview" (whatever that means)

They're limiting the number of playable digimon, probably to 100 or so. Habu wants the player to focus more on how your digimon partner and friends grow, rather than the number of digimon that you can collect. This time, the protag's names will be fixed and cannot be changed, and since the characters are going to be voiced their names will be called.

Oh man.

I knew this game was gonna be darker just by the music in the trailer.

Part of me has to give Habu credit for using gameplay mechanics to cleverly integrate story and character in a way to homage the anime while giving its own original spin that only a video game could deliver.

But the other part of me just knows that now this genie will be let out of the battle, people will never ever shut up why can't they have a partner with a unique personality in every Digimon game post Survive

Yeah, all the music in the trailer did give the impression that it was gonna be a sad game, rather than the "Wahoo, adventure!" thing that every other Digimon game is. I can imagine since all the kids this time around look like teenagers that it's like "Treasure your youth, because it will be some of the best days of your life".

I think that shot of the protagonist and Agumon in that abandoned cafe is probably the hallmark of it though. I can imagine both of them having some sort of sweet but sad and nostalgic conversation there.

And this game just got even more interesting.

Ya just gotta love how technology has advanced so much that they can apparently replicate the partner experience from the shows.

And hopefully one of said partners is a Diaboromon with a suitably nasty or rough personality to match. I have made no secret that he is one of my favorite mons after all, heheh.

c'mon habu i know the Relationship Values in hacker's memory were just a testbed for the dating sim

Habu did say something about wanting to make a dating sim.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth had such cheery topics like human trafficking, illegal organ harvesting from comatose bodies, people losing their bodies and going into permanent comas and watching over their vegetative bodies, a ghost girl trying to kill everyone because it made her happy, and lots of death, and the new Digimon World games show that the hero from the first game isn't doing so hot, and the main villain wanted to erase the entire Digimon multiverse from existence, just to see what happens next.

I'm thinking that maybe we should make a separate forum for Digimon Survive? No special reason, just thought it would be nice.

Survive sounds prety cool, but I'm not too sure about the whole "unavoidable deaths" thing. I kinda prefer it if games with such themes got a Earn Your Happy Ending sorta deal. I'd hate having to finish a game with any sort of regrets.

The point is not that deaths are unavoidable, but more that decisions have actual consequences this time. Logically it should be possible to keep everyone in one piece if you play it right unless there's someone who dies first to sell the danger or there is some sort of traitor/villain within the stranded kids.

I don't agree with making a separate thread for digimon survive. For one, it's launch is a long ways off, and two this thread is fairly innactive as it is.

So far the language has been that "People will die". So yeah, I'm definitely expecting the occasional "Save person X or person Y" bit. I hope I'm wrong on that, because that is the absolute lowest and most contrived of dramatic choices, but I'm still putting money on it.

DIGIMON SURVIVE WILL SUPPORT 6 DIFFERENT LANGUAGES

...As a big Digimon fan, I'm feeling pretty ambivalent to Survive. On one hand, a game where your partner evolves in a way reminiscent of the anime series is right up my alley, but on the other hand, the tone they're going for is seriously off-putting to me and I think I'll end up having to give the game a pass unless something they reveal happens to sway me towards it.

There’s really not much to be put-off of though cause we only got like little bits now.

All we got is like one convo & a snippet of a match.
