After a quick search I discovered that there was a criminally low amount of Atomic Robo discussion going on. Going to the relevant trope page will give you a good idea of what the series is about, but here it is in as pure a form as I can describe: robotic Science Hero has wild and bizarre adventures throughout the 20th and 21st century. How does that not sound awesome?

The newest issue got off to a good start, although it was surprisingly somber. Bryan Clevinger likely didn't want to undermine the intensity of Tesladyne's mission with too much banter, but there was still plenty of subtle humor and clever dialogue to go around.

I don't want to spoil anything for anyone who hasn't read Issue 1 of Volume 6 yet, but there's a lot of nods to the past couple of miniseries in here, including the grandson of Volume 2's Sally Sparrow and Those Two Guys from the final issue of Volume 3! Apparently they were banished to Norway for accidentally pulling that Eldritch Abomination back into the real world and nearly dooming all of existence.

I looooooove Atomic Robo. But, I am a vile trade waiter. And on top of that I haven't bought Volume 5 yet.*sigh*

Atomic Robo really is a perfect comic. There is so much done right, the writing, the art, the colouring, the lettering, all of it just fits.

So rather than list the good stuff, I'll list everything that is bad or mediocre about the comic:

  • Atomic Robo tends to be a jerk once per trade. But that's not really to do with the quality of the comic, just my own personal preference.
  • In vol. #1; issue #1, Atomic Robo's eyes grow bigger with each panel.
  • Uh, that's it.

The rest is perfection.

Well, I can think of a few other imperfections. The climax of Deadly Art of Science/volume 5 left a bad taste in my mouth. For some reason the Edison/Tesla Beam-O-War was just too much for me - but even that was AWESOME.

Well, that end was kinda sweetly depressing.

I've been reading the series via TP Bs.

Except for Savage Sword of Doctor Dinosaur. And I still got the TPB for that, too.

Because Dr. Dinosaur is the absolute best. [lol]

[up] But I thought Robo's brain was in his torso/power core (or at least, that's what they rebuilt him from last time). What good does sending them his head do? I mean, unless there's also explicit instructions on where to find the rest of him in there.

[up]Maybe they installed a backup-drive in his head? We will see...

Aw Geez, Robo doesn't make it or something? Bummer.

Also, I'd like to point out that I too find myself very interested in Atomic Robo (in fact, I kinda wish this was published by a publisher that was more recognizable like IDW Publishing or something, just so more people would notice it), but I've only read the Free Comic Book Day comics and the first issue of Vol. 1. I'd get more of these, but I don't exactly have the money for it. sad

By the way, Atomic Robo has never had any official crossovers, has it?
