Sometimes I think the best argument for one perspective is the irrationality of those who say otherwise.
In this case, it is the way an analogy got met with threats of violence, rather than calm, reasoned counterarguments. I was never sure who to trust on affirmative action, but moments like this leave me marginally more inclined to trust its opponents.
"The Daily Show has to be right 100% of the time; FOX News only has to be right once." - Jon StewartI believe I posted this somewhere before, but did someone mention racist cookies?
They never travel alone. The comparison would make some sense if these minorities had long been thought to be unable to truly appreciate a good cookie, and, furthermore, if they had long been forbidden — by law or by custom — from eating them. And if, moreover, eating these cookies was strongly correlated with getting better jobs and higher wages later in life, and, even now, these minorities ate, on average, far less cookies than white people (and, as a consequence, tended to have lower standards of living).
Under these circumstances, I'd say that giving discounts on cookies to these minorities would make perfect sense.

But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas. How are those cookies racist?
Can you picture the reaction if they were sold in the U.S. ?
They never travel alone.Speaking as an American...no.
Negro means black in Spanish, and lots of people in Brazil have fros; some people need to chill the fuck out. If you look for something you tend to find it.
Woot! 50 cent cookies for me! Now if I were Native American that would be even better.
I'm black but not American and I honestly don't feel offended by this...

It's not offensive, it's stupid.
There's a difference.
go ahead and do every stupid thing you can imagine
True that. Couldn't they have found a better way to make a stand?
Probably pretty much anything else....
well no, not anything else, but there are still better ways to get a point across.
go ahead and do every stupid thing you can imagineUnder these circumstances, I'd say that giving discounts on cookies to these minorities would make perfect sense.
this, really.
You can't even write racist abuse in excrement on somebody's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat! How is this even racist?
Don't overthink this: it's free cookies for whoever can pass for a Native American female.
And better than thy stroke; why swellest thou then?Everyone. I'm gonna go get us a fuckton of free cookies with my awesome Mayan female status.
FREE COOKIES FOR ALL.
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahWrong American. Otherwise Hispanics would have the same discount.
And better than thy stroke; why swellest thou then? But we're Indians...
;_;
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahNext best option: kash, go get a tan, then dye your hair black.
By that logic, i'm indian.

Yes you are! More cookies dammit...
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahTechnically I am, but who really goes into their family history?
...people who want free cookies?
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahLook, most people in the United States don't know the difference in physical appearance between an Indian and a Native American. You're still good to go.
The emotions of others can seem like such well guarded mysteries, people 8egin to 8elieve that's how their own emotions should 8e treated.Dot or feather?
Totemic hit it back on page 1. We don't have a race problem that universities and employers need to compensate for. We have a class problem because of how our schools are funded. It just happens that non-Asian minorities are overrepresented among the lower classes because we did have a caste system until the '60s.
“Love is the eternal law whereby the universe was created and is ruled.” — St. Bernard
We're talking bout affirmative action, and we'd buy the cookies; mission accomplished.
