This seems like something that might explode in their face or not.
Fight smart, not fair. How fitting for me to be binging on Extra Credits that I can use a quote from it.
"Sony(Microsoft), a word to the wise: Do not tangle with the kind of people who install Linux on their Playstations(P Cs). Trust me, you are wasting your time."
Are people really so badly pissed-off about not being able to install Linux on the PS3 (and why would you want to do that in the first place)? I barely heard anything about an outrage.
People aren't as awful as the internet makes them out to be.It was just an excuse for all the ROW ROW FIGT DA POWA XD kids to come out of the woodwork.
What exactly does this have to do with video games (and no, "Sony also did this with the PS 3" is not a valid answer)? This should be in Yack Fest.

I really have to agree with this. Aren't there laws in place to keep businesses like this from pulling such obvious monopoly ploys?
Actually, it's not really appropriate to compare it with Sony. Installing Linux on a console is rather nonsensical and I can't imagine what reason one could possible have for that. Installing Linux on an actual computer is a completely different matter.
Also, didn't Microsoft pull this earlier? If anything, it's "not learning from their own mistakes".

People aren't as awful as the internet makes them out to be.Linux on the PS 3 made it, like, retardedly easy to pirate. Just load up the appropriate firmware, now your PS 3 will never be found by Sony and it can directly download pirated iso's and play them. That's what the PSN is, really.
It's the same way with the Wii, but you don't even need Linux. Just boot up the Homebrew Channel, install [illicit program] and [other illicit program], load up that pirated iso on a flash drive, plug and go.
I don't know what he deal is with the 360. I know it's been cracked, but I don't know how hard and for what.

Windows 8 seems terrible for actual P Cs anyway (the best case scenario is that it is identical Windows 7 after tweaking, but still runs slower due to extra background processes), and If you are a tablet owner wanting to install Linux, you would probably be starting with an Android anyway. But that's beside the point here.
But yeah Microsoft, way to go. You are actually giving us Linux users a reason to buy a mac now, although the DIY approach would probably be the preferred option for those who are confident with that kind of thing.
Oh, and for relevance to Video Games, there are games on Windows that are hard to run under Linux/Wine, resulting in people going for a Windows/Linux dual-boot. Relevant enough?

My standard Anime Theme song game variant rules: [Censored by ACTA]i always confuse why people want to have linux on PS 3
Because Linux fans like to run Linux on their fridges and toasters if possible, just because they can. That's why.
My standard Anime Theme song game variant rules: [Censored by ACTA]Looks like it's meant to be a security feature to me. It's not like it just detects if you're running Linux.
Infinite Tree: an experimental storyThat, and piracy.
That's lovely. So why did you post, then?
The sin of silence when they should protest makes cowards of men.And you should care... for the same reason you should care when your neighbor's house burns down, even though it's not your house?
Artificial technological barriers that are implemented solely or primarily to protect intellectual property by punishing the user are never a good thing, even if you don't happen to use the technology in question.
Not that I really expected anything better from Microsoft. What troubles me more is that their competition is behaving just as poorly these days, so there's no legal avenue out of the rat's nest.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed. The thing is, just like life, Linux will find a way. It always seems to; even horribly proprietary stuff like the original 68k Macs and the 4th-generation iPod have gotten Linux ports. Despite what the negative Nancies on Slashdot say, Linux always prevails in the end. So I wouldn't worry about it.

When the PS 3 came out, Sony advertised it as an affordable supercomputer. Customers such as the US Air Force bought hundreds of them to use as supercomputer clusters. And naturally, a supercomputer isn't too useful if you can't put any software on it.
Anyway, this move seems like it's begging for an antitrust suit.

Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlaySavage Heathen, can we keep this at least vaguely related to the specific topic, rather than the Anarchist Manifesto redux? kthxbye
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"That wasn't a manifesto: There's a trend towards outside control of people's hardware and communications, both by governments and corporations. Microsoft and Apple (who together dominate 90-odd% of the personal computer market) are designing platforms that only execute code they approve of.
There's a slew of both corporate and governmental measures towards tighter control. Some of those show a frightening degree of synergy.
Microsoft's measure is a giant step towards outside control of people's computers. I don't think it's off-topic to comment on its political context.

You exist because we allow it and you will end because we demand it.Well, Savage, they can design their software however they want. You can buy a Mac if it bothers you that much. If they lose a substantially large enough amount of business they might reconsider.
~shrug~
Not a Linux user, so, I don't personally care. They're software design is their software design.
I am now known as Flyboy.
Can't companies learn from others mistakes?
For those who cannot get the article basically Linux cannot be run on windows system without using a highly restrictive and non-gpl boot setup (Could somebody more technical give a better explanation?)
