There's cutting costs, and then there's deliberately hazardous!

Bond villain death traps aren't designed with as a malicious disregard for human lives as the tools and machinery in these games.

I'm guessing labels like "Do not go near faulty air locks" and "Stay away from spacious engine rooms" were abandoned in favor of "shoot da limbs off".

Though seriously, how did the necro's survive without getting maimed/incinerated by all the faulty machinery? Its like they mysteriously know when a doors about to glitch.

Either that or they mostly stayed in the part of the ship you find them in.

[up][up] Well, necromorphs are basically indestructible as long as they have all their limbs and don't catch fire. Those that do get killed get repurposed into other, bigger necromorphs.

It's the Circle of Unlife!

Some people are giving Dead Space 3 3/10 just because of the lack of horror. If that's the case, they should put that same rating under the other two games.

Dead Space:Extraction was scary, though.

Yeah, the problem with the games is that it gives you way too much ammo, and gives you stores to purchase more stuff and better armor, which removes the feeling of helplessness. Really it's more an environmental horror game. To me it's not so much the Necromorphs that are scary as the surrounding environment. Like the Ishimura. How would you feel if you were constantly traipsing around corridor after corridor filled with blood, body parts, and dead people? I'd probably be constantly grossed out. Plus 3 had some pretty creative and creepy enemies, like the guys in the parkas and Feeders.

Please, Viseral blew their load with the exploding zombie babies and undead bezerker children. Now anything they put out looks tame in comparison.

the waster necromorphs have the extra creepy feature that their legs can come off and run after you.

I thought they were at their scariest when their legs and torso was gone, and they scuttled after you like a spider.

The regenerators shook me up a bit, until I could lop off their legs of with ease, then they seem a little pathetic, lying there, sans limbs "When I regrow my legs, I'm so going to kick your ass!".

Trying pure survival mode, I keep running out of ammo, which makes for some tense situations.

I think this series would have benefited immensely if they had a human centipede type enemy that split into other centipedes when shot.

Didn't the Divider do that? We already have one Asteroids Monster, I don't think we need another.

Maybe as a boss; a huge chain of human torsos fused together and crawl around the arean and try to eat you.

Yeah, we've already got necro's that use vomit as an attack and a screaming mass attached to a wall, you want more nausea fuel?

A lot of people like to say Dead Space is survival horror, when really its a strategic space horror game, similar to System Shock 2, just with more guns. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, though Jump Scares get old really fast. Subtle horror is good, and Dead Space 2 had a lot of that with the nursery room.

If we're discussing Necromorph designs, I have a go at it.

Imagine an unseen Necromorph that is really big, but unseen. It lives outside of decompression windows, and when it appears it'll smash the window open, where you have to shoot the window shut and dismember the tentacle. To preserve the surprise, it would only appear three times in the entire game. You never see the whole thing, but what appears is grotesque.

Another:

Feeders that puke acid, and can create Dividers.

If you want to really amp up the horror, you should randomize spawn points. Just never knowing whether or not an enemy will pop out of a vent would really change the game, and force players to be more skillful. The more psychological ones like [up] would also work really well randomized.

Something that beginning to bug me about Dead space 3 is how functional and intact the ships are, they've been drifting around for 200+ years and they still have air and gravity. The ship from the first game was structurally compromised from a few days of necromorphs. It would be far better if you had more system failures, imagine retreating though a section with gravity going on and off and no air supply, all while fending off hoards of necromorphs.

[up]The first part of the game is rather rushed, probably because they wanted to get to Tau Volantis faster.

Then I wouldn't recommend my drinking game; take a shot per swear word uttered.

You'll be dead by the end of the Terra Nova.
