I just started watching the anime a while ago, and I am thinking of trying to find or read the manga and novels. I must say the world depicted is quite interesting. Despite looking bright and funny, there is a lot of dark material present.

My thoughts:

  • Layfon develops quite a bit as a character. Especially since when he was trying to make Heaven's Blade.

  • Nina, while a bit more jerkish, is actually pretty understandable.

  • Gorneo, quite an interesting character. He has quite a dynamic going with wanting to see justice done, but not through underhanded means.

  • Haia, this is one kind of character I don't see often. Someone who resents our hero for his power and wants to prove something. A person who dislikes born winner types.

I have to say that the plot gets really weird eventually, in a disappointing way. In general, I think the writer tries to do too many things at once and it ends up hurting the series.

Like, space time distortion level weird?

I can handle weird plots pretty well, though.

Unfortunately the anime has a Gecko Ending that tends to drop it from "good anime" to "mediocre".

The ending was indeed weird, and not in a a good way. More of in the "combo sword that doubles as a surfboard" weird.

The novels on the other hand I thought went in a very different direction. Still weird but much more interesting. sentient filth monsters that make alliances with humans.

Both versions have the space time distortion weird, but only the novels seem to be doing something interesting with it.

I did feel that the anime developed some of the characters better.

And of course, Felli is adorable. (She actually got her own shoujo manga spin off). Felli is adorable in all the adaptations of course, but the anime is so much more fun. (What with all the shin kicking.)
