Yes, but that was a reboot, and the characters were much younger so it made sense that they would look different. This is occurring five years after, and in continuity with, the original series.
And I think Hugo Weaving could be a good Thrawn.

I don't see why you couldn't recast the Original Trilogy characters. They recast the original Star Trek crew a couple years back, and it worked out fine (yes I know its an alternate reality, but still).
