Seems a fun-loving troper (their words) has set himself up a bot that creates a new page, adds gibberish to it, then bounces to a new IP address, creates a new page, adds gibberish to it, repeat ad nauseum.

For the most part, its not bugging them that much, but on the odd occasion this thing's apparently overwritten an alread-existing page, so its bugging someone over there.

The guys over at the mirror figure its a troper whose set this thing up because apparently the new pages being created are word for word precise title matches for pages that are not yet on the Mirror Wiki, yet are here on TV Tropes.

So, as one of the few people who play in both sandboxes, I've been asked to convey a polite "Okay, you've had your fun, please knock it off" to the troper in question, whomever he or she might be.

Personally, I don't think it will work, but I was asked, so I delivered the message.

Being in a Japanese-produced work is not enough of a difference to warrant its own trope.

If you can get the IP of the person doing it, PM it to one of the mods here. If that IP is shared by a known troper, I think something like that would definitely fall under the "importing/exporting" drama rule.

I would also suggest banning the IP from the mirror wiki as well, but I assume something is preventing them from having done that already.

From what I've been told, its a multitude of I Ps. Jack tracked down a couple, and they were making identical vandalisms (is that a word?), within four or five minutes of each other, from such separated locations as Wellington, New Zealand, San Francisco, California, and Eddleston, York, England.

EDIT:

Okay, some of the IP addresses:

  • 211.144.198.130
  • 213.144.21.150
  • 150.15.96.163
  • 72.14.179.117
  • 168.187.72.69
  • 212.121.219.1

That sounds like someone using proxies, most of which are already banned here. (Proxies, I mean. I have no way of knowing if those particular IP addresses are.)

Unfortunately, if they're dedicated enough to go to that extra step, I think you're correct in assuming that politely requesting they stop won't do much good at all. =/

If he can get some evidence that it's a current troper, we'll certainly do something about it. It's a clear violation of "No exporting or importing drama", and it would merit a complete Google Bounce on anyone we caught doing it.

Without that, there's nothing we can do. There are plenty of folks who aren't tropers who could be doing it.

Frankly, this needs Fast Eddie's delicate touch. All I can tell you is that none of those I Ps have been banned here. If anyone can find out whether those I Ps are in regular use by a known troper, it's him. PM him.

I'll pass it on to Jack. I don't think he's in a blaming mood, if you know what I mean. More like he wanted you guys to be aware someone was using you as a screen.

Tell him we appreciate it. This is probably best handled directly between the admins, though. Jack and Eddie know what information they have and what they need. Passing it through several more layers simply increases the change that something important will be mistransmitted or missed.

Does Eddie have a public-use email address I can pass along to Jack?

What's the nature of the "gibberish"? Maybe somebody is trying to automatically scrape pages for you, and grabbing non-trope parts of webpages by mistake.

[up][up]Here is an example. According to Mandypants (one of the moderators), to date the joker doing this has added close to 100 pages filled with crap like that.

Oh, I thought you said it was copying content, not just the titles, sorry. If that's the case, then they could just be using the random article button here and be a nobody...

Worldmaker, I think locking this thread up is probably the best thing to do. I Jack knows how to get in touch with Eddie and it's best handled between them, I think. I'm not seeing any reason to keep this open for speculation by people who can't do anything about it.

OK?

Cool. I didn't want you to think I was arbitrarily shutting you down.

Locking then.
