I figured it out, nevermind.

Rig is actually pretty fun and kind of cool. Rachel is pretty awesome too and so is Momiji. I can't figure out mila's play too well.

Also my game locked up twice, after like 2 hours of playing straight though.

I got the free version and bought Jacky because I really like Virtua Fighter. While I've been able to more or less get the hang of how VF plays, I always have trouble with the DOA games because I can't get the hang on the hold system. Guess I'll play the tutorial and see if that helps.

The tutorial does help. Personally I can't get used to the critical burst system(In fact critical burst is probably my least favorite change in DOA 5) and it's really hampering my ability to play effectively, sadly. This DOA seems really hard to play defensively in(even moreso than the older ones), at least online. I don't know how anyone is supposed to defend against Ayanebusa onslaughts. Those two have insane offensive potential and can seemingly leap though punish attempts while catching you in combos that take up a 3rd to over half of your life bar. And worse, Ayane is the Ken Masters of the game in that she makes up majority of online picks(along with Momiji who gets used a lot as well, hayabusa less so but still one of the more popular picks, DEFINITELY the most popular guy). I get squashed completely by just about every Ayane and Hayabusa I fight, and Momiji as well to a lesser extent.

Mila and Kokoro give me a lot of headache too, but for different reasons and fights against them don't feel hopeless like they do against Ayanebusa. Anyway sorry for the scrub rant but these ninjas are driving me bonkers lol.

I've completed all the tutorial missions and I think I have a much better grasp on things now, but I still needed to do some experimenting to figure out the critical stun stuff. If I'm getting it right, some attacks cause a special stun in which the opponent can only do holds from. It's different from the normal sort of combo stun where the opponent couldn't do anything.

Anyway, while in this critical stun, if you keep landing moves that can do more critical stuns, this eventually builds up to the point where it flashes red, and when that happens you can do a Critical Burst move to put them into a really long stun they can't get out of, and from there you can do what you want with them, like a juggle or a power blow.

One more thing, and I hope I get this right, but it really seems like there a lot of emphasis on mind games, reading your opponent and predicting what moves they'll do. If you want to escape from a combo, you need to be able to predict what their next move is and use the right hold. You really need to know the opponent's character. I sometimes have a hard time telling when a move is a high or a mid, and even though I get the timing right I don't do the right hold. So I'll get hit with a mid attack, but I thought it was a high attack.

So I just noticed that Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate is available on Playstation Store. It's a standalone game and thus I don't need to have vanilla DOA 5 as a prerequisite, right? I wonder why I'm seeing $49.99 as the price instead of the $39.99 that I see here, though.

Anyone know what DLC that DOA 5 Ultimate and its Complete DOA 5 Costumes add-on don't include?

EDIT: Wait, so there's a "bundle" at $49.99, a game-unlock at $39.99, and a free "trial and pay-to-unlock" version. What the hell? Which should I pick?

[up]I just went with the free version and then just got the characters and DLC that interested me. I guess if you want a all the characters and story mode, get the standard version, and get the bundle if you really love having a lot of alternate costumes, which is what most of the DLC is. There's also music packs with tracks from DOA 2 and 3, which I got because I like that music more than some of the character themes in 5.

And no, you don't need vanilla to play this.

Here's the thing, though: I'm not sure whether the one that is literally called a bundle by the online store is simply add-ons or is the whole game plus add-ons (which would make more sense to call it a bundle than to do so for a mere add-ons package), though I'm leaning towards the latter due to the sheer size (over 6 GB!).

So I started on the DOA 5 U free trial version's tutorial mode, just to get a feel for how much different the gameplay is to DOA 1 and DOA 2 (yeah, I've never gotten a hold of anything else in the series).

I only have this to say: I knew that DOA is a franchise of very technical-oriented games, but right now I'm stuck on Lesson 7.6, trying to get the combo string right, and goddamit, the controls are overly sensitive! XD And it doesn't even bother showing me what the resulting combo should look like first before ordering me to perform it! Yeah, I know, there's the checklist to the left, but that's not that helpful if I accidentally did a few extra moves before or after the right combo by pressing too hard or too many times; how am I supposed to know which of them is the right one? Yeesh, maybe I'm not cut out for these kinds of games; even when I played DOA 2, I just sorta button-mashed my way through the story mode after I balked at the prospect of having to memorize dozens of move-combos for each character (i.e. several hundreds of combos in total). I'm not a supercomputer, dammit! XD How do you guys deal with this?

Anyway, I found out that the PSN Store, for some reason, refuses to show me the price for the DOA 5 U game bundle that I talked about before if I have already installed the Core Fighters trial. Now I can't figure out how much would I save by buying that instead of adding DLC to the free Core Fighters version — not that the PSN store even bothers explaining what the bundle contains, unlike a few other game bundles' overview pages. -_-

I wouldn't worry about memorizing moves, you'll more likely be playing by feel and instinct once you get down the moves and strings that are useful. And the game will show you how the move is supposed to look in command training if you press in the R3 button, I think.

Right. Anything about the bundle stuff, or should I just de-install the free version and then do the comparison?

[up]I really don't know. I've tried looking into it, but I can't find anything out that would really help you. Might as well de-install just to be safe.

EDIT: In other news, there are Haloween DLC costumes out now for all characters, and patch 1.03 is out: http://teamninja-studio.com/doa5/ultimate/us/information/info_20131015.html

btw, to use the costumes you'll need to download Costume Catalog 04.

Okay so the new DOA 5 U arcade character was revealed.

[1]

...

This is the kind of crap we should've moved away from. And did DOA really need yet ANOTHER blonde chick? Yawn. More brown girls plz, just one is not enough.

I feel like this just ups the Creep factor by more.

Hayashi wants gamers to take DOA more seriously, adds loli. Wtf?

And then she's so generic looking. Even though DOA isn't exactly groundbreaking on that note, Kasumi and Ayane design wise are quite recognizable and unique looking(especially for their time). But Marirose is your cookie cutter goth loli with nothing that really makes her stand out among characters of her archetype, which instead makes her feel like a blatant attempt at appealing to otaku which only further serves to alienate newcomers from the game. Hopefully her fighting style makes up for it, but I'm not sure about a crybaby who breaks into tears when she loses. Ugh.

Not sure why they couldn't give us a female boxer of some sort, DOA still lacks their token boxer.

So there will be an Arcade Version.

And they gave us a loli. Well that's new... but imagine the implications considering it's DOA... D-O-A!

(By the way is it just me or that loli kinda reminds me of Rachel Alucard?)

[up][up]That Loli also reminds me of any number of other goth lolis. That hairstyle is, like, the standard.

Implications? Fuck, remember that Ayane was 16 until recently. They'll do anything to tent pants.

What's it going to take to get us to stop buying Team Ninja games? Every one seems to have something offensively wrong about it, and we just keep going back.

Because the games have other stuff it does right that makes it worth playing.

But it makes this kind of nonsense stand out much more.
