I think America is on the way out as a superpower, but Balkanization or outright destruction? Unlikely. It's rather bad, but it's not that bad.

~shrug~

Our Congress is bankrupt, morally and politically, the Presidency is too weak a position to do anything and too dangerous a position to allow any power, the Supreme Court is made up of partisan hacks, people have discovered the farce of the American Dream as a handful control more than half of all the money, the poor are left out to dry as the rich get richer, one party is utterly blinded by rhetoric in the face of facts that invalidate some of their positions, if not most of them, while the other is too spineless to stand up for what it believes in, our economy is eroding and shipping off to the Second World while no one is willing to do anything about it, the education system is shattered and no one has any inclination to fix it and/or can't agree on how to do it, and the military suddenly finds itself rather ineffective in the age of modern warfare and nuclear weaponry.

To add insult to injury, the rest of the world disdains us, we disdain the rest of the world, and nobody is willing to do a thing about rampant social degradation or the rise of a new, far more dangerous power, even as the one that might have been useful had it got its act together is allowed to fall to pieces while others watch, like a car crash on the side of the road.

Sounds like a regular day to me.

Hmm, this sounds awfully familiar. What era do I remember this from?

Oh yes! The Jacksonian Era!

Before it, the Presidency was horribly weak, and during Jackson's presidency we all most went to Civil War over state's rights! Before the civil war we just got over a major economic slump. The Supreme Court was just the same, Congress was just as manipulative, and we just got over a war with Britain.

We've been through this before. Don't make it out like it's the end of America. It will take much more than this to destroy America.
