I launched Heroic Rematch a long time ago, not being able to come up with a better name and I still don't think it covers the point perfectly. So how does anyone like changing it to The Warning Battle as a trope? As in the pre-climatic fight The Hero and the villain(usually the Big Bad) where The Hero loses first to show the difference in power before the real thing.

Heroic Rematch found in: 18 articles, excluding discussions.

This title has brought 54 people to the wiki from non-search engine links since 20th FEB '09.

Looks pretty underused. I'm not seeing any serious problems with a rename, especially if it's the original creator asking.

edit: we should probably discuss what name to use, though.

So can you think of anything better? It's a pretty common trope, I know that much. I think Warning Battle sounds cool enough and would give people a better idea what it's about.

The examples actually seem to focus on the second battle where the hero actually wins.

Honestly, I think the best way to handle this is cut it and send it back to YKTTW.

Could use an expanded description. Is it just about "heroes lose a fight against an opponent, then later win against them" or are there more requirements than that?

[up] Pretty much. The point of the trope is to show how little hope The Hero has against the villain so their real fight would be a lot more intimidating. Also a way to make sure The Hero doesn't win every battle without it turning into a Downer Ending.

Eh? Answering an "or" question with "yes" isn't very helpful...

Right sorry, it's the former. Added with what I said in my last post.

Hmm, Warning Battle doesn't seem quite right. It's not exactly a warning of anything. The first battle is lost to show that ultimate victory for the hero may not be easy. It's a good trope. Maybe something like Worrying Early Loss? Or, to emphasize that we all know it doesn't matter, because the hero can still ultimately win, Meaningless First Loss? Not entirely happy with either of those, but maybe they're a step in the right direction?

The Warning Battle in YKTTW here. Might still need a better name.
