Yeah, the litmus test for this sort of thing is "if I removed the picture, and the caption works just as well on its own, then the caption is doing too much". As long as the picture contributes something to the illustration of the trope, it's fine. Of course, we want the picture to explain as much as possible without the caption, but it's no reason to not go with a captioned picture if no better picture is available.
Reaction Image RepositoryEven if I don't read the caption, I can still see that one of the girls on the cover has an outfit that parents wouldn't let their children see.
My thoughts exactly. I mean, look at that girl. That is not standard-issue kids' show attire.
Infinite Tree: an experimental storyI really like the La Blue Girl pic. It helps that the kid has a shit-eating grin, he knows he put one over on whoever bought it for him.

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Is it time to replace the picture, or do we need more opinions?
Indeed.
"The Daily Show has to be right 100% of the time; FOX News only has to be right once." - Jon StewartOK, I went and replaced the image.
Looks good...that caption bugs me, though. Any other ideas?
"What a nice and wholesome present for little Billy."
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.Okay, let's see the old pic for reference.
Catch me where? See my profile!Yeah, if you don't know the context, it looks like an actual movie called that.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.I added a variant of DQZ's caption to the pic. Locking up.
Well said.
