Vintage arcade and console games had plenty of drawbacks. Remember all those arcade games which were designed to take more and more quarters? Remember games with no clear instructions for how to progress, or how to survive? See Older Than the NES, and browse through the sections of Nintendo Hard.
When I was young, my parents bought me an Atari 2600 and a bunch of games. I suspect quite a few of them were dirt cheap — I don't think there was much demand for them around 1985. Pitfall and River Raid were among the best. I also had competent stuff like Yars Revenge, and some crap games like ET The Extra Terrestrial.
Also, I was kinda obsessed with the arcade game Black Tiger for a year or two. To be honest, it's way too similar to the Ghouls and Ghosts games, but I didn't know that at the time.
Putting aside the Apple I Ie lineup, I was a big fan of Sopwith:
What happy times those days were, before video games were forever ruined by pointless tutorials and endless fmv cutscenes.
Behold, Robotron 2084!
Every game that has independent moving/walking controls, innocent people to save, robots, or evil circles is a ripoff of this game. Let its name never be forgotten!
