The central purpose of this thread is for an RP I will be running in the, well, Roleplaying forum. It is invitation-only and this thread here is in place of a signup thread, and will be where the players infodump for the setting. That being said I'd like to hear Worldbuilding's ideas too (only fair since we're using your space!) and perhaps if I or one of the other players like your idea, you'll get an invitation too. With that in mind (and also the fact you may not get an invitation) I'd like permission beforehand to use the contents of any posts made in this thread, even if for NPC empires or what not.

With that disclaimer out of the way, here's the premise; A number of players would control empires and specifically one representative from this faction that would be trusted by the sovereign to speak for the nation as a whole. The RP would be freeform, no plot but for the political interactions between the empires, and the personal relations between the characters, unless the players decide on somethign they'd like to try and one of them is willing to GM the arc, after which it'd return to business-as-usual except, of course, for whatever changes the arc brought about. Players would control this significant (and probably Suish even, considering their status and the skills they'd need for it- the main reason this is invitation-only) and their empire simultaneously, so if another character requests audience with a sovereign, or if a battle takes place (which for the love of God should be discussed beforehand if when it happens) the necessary individuals would be in-place. They could even illustrate internal affairs and internal politics of their territories in 'isolated' posts consisting of short stories or similar.

I'm looking for a group of skilled roleplayers and/or worldbuilders to build a galaxy (though not a whole one, more a portion of one but whatever) of small or medium-sized nations, each one contributing their own. Cultural and societal details, military distribution, government and administrative setup, everything like that. Territories are to consist of up to 30 planets and a total population of 100 billion, so nothing too big. The setting would have a tech level to the point that, while advanced, FTL drives are very difficult to engineer and expensive to build, so starships would be rare (As in you can conceivable list the entire naval assets of your empire, lets say a rough guideline of three FTL starships per one billion population) Use common sense. Earth cannot be one of your holdings, and for the purposes of this RP nobody knows where it is, but it can be mentioned or even an integral part of the history of your empire. I'm currently running off a simple backstory that Earth, after achieving a state of peace and an interstellar Golden Age amongst its many colonies, was overrun by a superior alien race that has yet to be seen again. Therefore your empire can be entirely new aliens, entirely new humans/humanoids, or a human/humanoid nation descended from fleeing Earth colonists. We have four Human factions already, kinda full up here.

I have already passed out the first 'round' of invitations, but as I said at the beginning if you haven't received one and are interested, or even just passing through, please contribute your ideas.

Nice intro, SOCR.

Just some questions before I launch into worldbuilding; how hard is the SF here? Are we going to be using actual stellar physics or just have Star Wars-style hyperdrives and noisy space?

Great.

Anyways, I have an idea for a race that I'd like to play as. The details are still rough, but they come from a planet with almost triple that of Earth's gravity. Furthermore, the atmosphere of their world is an unpalatable mixture of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, meaning that they require specialized breathing gear when offworld. Despite their formidable strength, they are mostly pacifistic and their arid world ships many vital minerals offworld. They'd likely have a very strange lifecycle too, but I haven't ironed that out yet.

Well go for it. From the ideas I've seen and heard I may be the only ones playing as Earth-descended humans, and even then only the majority are unaltered humans... and Space Feudalism!

Two points I should have earlier addressed, and will be editing the OP to indicate:

The 'main' setting will likely be a diplomatic station, a la Babylon5 where we can all occupy the same space when not away on assignments. I'll design one myself but everyone can submit what designs they'd like to see (or simply design elements) and we can vote.

Also, it's not like our empires spontaneously came into existence, unless our FTL travels through the Fourth Wall. This thread should also be used to discuss likely prior interactions and a sort of starting point for diplomatic agreements,a s well as driving motivations we can launch the RP on. Who is at war at the start, who is in an alliance, what are the trade agreements, etc. A foundation for a collective past.

I've got some ideas for a potential race and empire; as you brought up in the invitation, SOCR, I could theoretically use the Kin from AGOG for this setting (though it would probably be a different empire than Dis Baba's Ark Reach Overcolony, as the seventeen star systems it controls might exceed the limits you set down by just a touch), or I could craft something entirely new.

I need some time to make up my mind in that regard.

So we each get control of one empire. Correct?

That's good, actually.

Anyways, we should probably draw up some kind of common meeting ground for our diplomats to meet. Maybe in orbit around the Neutral Planet? tongue

Seventeen systems should be fine, actually. Multiple planets per system would give you an advantage in total number but a disadvantage if one were to be taken, for example.

Yeah, like I suggested a diplomatic station, but I haven't gone to any details on that score yet. Though I'd suggest deep space over any planet, because even a neutral planet (especially a neutral planet) can be taken.

I'm not sure as to structure. I can get Nationstate's dossier template which you can use as a guideline to infodump I suppose. But really you're just posting your empire's information for now. As for the actual character you control, maybe we can flesh out the immediate setting first...? XD

Here is Nationstate's Factbook guide. You can ignore stuff like the formatting guides, and there would be some obvious changes, like Geography, and People would include a description of your species.

I was vaguely interested since, as happenstance would have it, I just created two new space-faring races today for a new concept, but I'm way far to the soft end of the science fiction hardness scale for this, so... sad

As I said in the OP, post your ideas anyway. We might like them enough to accept you in XD

A link to previous roleplaying experience here would be nice too, if you plan on going that route.
