The scale of threat's the same - total annihilation of the human species.
That's the threat in half the movies released every year. Not much of a similarity.
Well in both this film and Edge of Tomorrow the threat to humankind's continued existence is fought not by superheroes but by relatively normal folks stuck in extraordinary circumstances. In fact, the kind of people that combat the threat in these films are usually relegated to the unimportant, the cannon fodder, or those generally ordered around by some twat in lyrcra in the superhero genre movies. So there's that.
@ L Dragon: Then u missed the point o fGodzilla 2014's tone entirely. It was always suppsoed to be like the original, IE, it had godzilla in it for a little bit.
Plus, I don't think that Raleigh is any better then Ford when it comes to bland american military man.
Also, it's often thought that without the Godzilla film's success, we wouldn't have a Pacific Rim 2 to begin with, as Thomas Tull himself said that with the amount of money the original movie made, a sequel would have been unlikely at that point.
That was before Godzilla became a success at the box office.
Ergo, Legendary probably changed their minds.
Watch SymphogearCan we just nip this conversation in the bud, before it turns into yet another argument over whether Ford Brody or Raleigh Beckett is the more boring protagonist?
How about we instead talk about whether Newton or Conspiracy Dad is cooler, if we're going to be comparing and contrasting?
Bryan Cranston knows how to act, that's for sure.

Watch SymphogearI wouldn't say Joe is cooler than Newt, but he's a much more interesting character. The depths he sinks to in his depression and obsession, the sheer tragedy of the character, elevate him far beyond the shonen roots of Pacific Rim.
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatTruly he is True Art.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI can't take your opinions seriously when all you can respond with is sarcasm.
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the Great'S cool.
Forever liveblogging the Avengers'S'not. We're trying to have a civil conversation and you just dismiss one part out of hand, and I don't appreciate that.
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatNah man, 's cool.
I just snidely alluded to the true art is angsty thang to indicate my disagreement that something that is 'deeper' is 'bettah.'

Forever liveblogging the AvengersHow about you contribute instead of tearing down?
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatThis isn't going anywhere good. Cool off a bit, guys.
I personally don't see how the men and women who drive the Jaegers in Pacific Rim aren't superheroes. They have code names, super suits, and fight monsters. Presumably they'd have capes if someone figured out how to weaponize them.

Give them batman memory cloth cape stuck to the back of their suits so they can hang-glide off the top of a jaeger if they ever have to.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI was actually thinking of the Jaegers when I wrote that bit about the capes, but I derp'd out and didn't make that clear. Yours is a good idea too.
I have no unearthly idea WHY or what purpose they could serve but googling gundam cape brings up several images of giant robots wearing capes so, yeah, I guess it could work. Somehow.
Also, a gundam riding a giant horse robot but that was G Gundam. That kind of thing just happened.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersFor a second I was confused and thought that "googling gundam" was an exclamation of surprise. Like "great googly moogly."
"We're home, Chewie."Great googling gundams? Not bad.
Well, as long as we're violating a bunch of laws of physics anyway, capes don't seem too unreasonable.

Sound like something Captain Haddock would say if he was an otaku.
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatThe capes are nuclear. Analog.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.I can imagine capes be thrown on for parades.
I haven't seen Edge of Tomorrow yet, and while I do think I'll quite enjoy it, I don't get how you are comparing it to Pacific Rim. One's time loop shenanigans the other is giant robots vs giant monsters. Kind of apple and oranges here.
