Chess Room

Junko was still in the clear to get all the way across the board, assuming no interference. Tammy, meanwhile, had moved one space forward. This presented her with several options when it came to baiting out other pieces, if they wanted to risk giving the black side a turn. Any number of pawns might be tempted, and there were three spaces he could place herself in if she wanted to try tangling with one of them next turn.

Karina visibly relaxed on the notion that Kyla's disappearance wasn't her fault. On the other hand, Junko's further explanation did provoke a series of confused gestures.

She didn't have the opportunity to ask back, as the two other maids continued their discussion.

"Don't worry, Tammy, it happens. Is she important to you?" — She addressed Tammy's apology. Before realizing the more pressing matters. — "Oh... um... sorry Jessie, go ahead."

"It's probably better to not try to understand." says Junko at Karina's confused look "I've learned to just take it all in stride. Then again I'm an odd case." she shrugs.

Berenice found police tape and damp floors unsettling. She'd seen the cops come here before, and she'd opened the doors and let them in. It was what these disturbances represented. As far as she was concerned, this was as much her home as it was the Master's and she didn't like the idea of people traipsing through it that she hadn't let in - a disturbance that was, more or less, completely beyond her control to stop or even manipulate.

Further introspection was rudely disrupted by a smell that, quite frankly, reminded the albino of her own home.

Keg party?

As the albino looked over the cellar a door she didn't recognize caught her eye: it was very dark beyond. She hasn't seen it, right? :P

"Yeah, a big stick would be useful," Berenice smirked before turning to the new maid, "I think there might be a flashlight kept in here?"

Luck roll for the maids? 2*3=6 ... Berenice has very little luck.

Berenice was unable to find a flashlight under the bar. She did find a hand-held gas lighter - for those especially festive drinks - but the illumination it provided was lacking, to say the least. Berenice has not seen this particular secret passage before, though this isn't the first time she has been in this situation. It is a very old house, and has been inhabited by generations of very... ambitious men.

"She's been my roommate ever since she came to work for Master Dan nya," Tammy replies to Karina. "I was still a rookie then so he thought it best to pair us." Then she turns to face Jessie. "Found how I can run interference yet nya?" the cat girl calls to the ghost.

"Maybe... Try moving forward two spaces, Miss Tammy," Jessie suggests. (Jessie rolls 4 x Cunning 2 = 8 to think ahead somewhat.) "Um,... If a black piece moves before Miss Karina, it may try to set itself up for a sacrifice. Don't fall for it."

"Got it nya," Tammy says and starts to move forward. Just then, the ghost recalls something she was taught about the game. Interference, at least often, requires a sacrifice from the side running interference. "Ah! Wait, there must be a better way," Jessie calls out, but too late as the cat girl completes her move.

Luck roll for finding something, I suppose...1d6 = 1. Oh, dear. Just for fun, Athletics roll...1d6x2 = 2. Oh dear indeed.

There was some stumbling and crashing, and a sudden and substantial burst of not-very-maidlike swearing followed by the crash of shattering glass, before Elizabeth jumped backwards, hitting a bar stool and tumbling tail-over-teakettle. "Spider," she gasped, struggling to get up. "Really big one. I think." For the first time she glanced at what she was holding, the jagged-edged neck of a wine bottle. "Little bastard moved too quickly for me to hit..."

The impact brought her back to her senses somewhat. Oh, wait, I think that was the sort of unladylike behaviour that Mum always complains about. "Anyway, maybe there's a flashlight elsewhere? Or..." Roll cunning, 1d6x2 = 10 "...well, there's brandy and we could probably get a few pieces of wood—think about it, torchlight expedition! Although I'm not sure if that's a good idea in a wine cellar."

???

It... it wasn't happening! For the first time in like four moves, her the little black bishop icon on the screen was behaving itself. The lone white rook seemed to have put itself in a 'bait' position, but who knows what would happen if she actually took the bait; Misaki wasn't even sure if she was actually playing chess anymore, with all the interruptions and rogue/disappearing pieces.

The little food dispenser in the corner of the room that spat out a handful of peanuts every time she successfully completed a move was also frankly insulting, but beggars couldn't be choosers. She didn't hear that scary lady coming back yet and last time she'd checked the door was still locked. The green on black screen of the ancient computer taunted her, though; she might only have seconds to choose her next move, before the game started acting up again.

"Polishing, polishing, polishing the knobs, gotta polish all the knobs~"

Ludmilla was hard at work, cleaning the knobs on a heavy wooden door, happily singing to herself. She wanted to give this job her all, so that hopefully, unlike all the previous jobs, she would actually remain employed for any meaningfully long period of time.

She looked around the room, taking yet another momentary break from her cleaning to get a better feel for where she was. The room was dusty (which she was proud of, having ensured that it had just the right amount of dust to be antiquey, and not a particle more), and full of things that suggested genius, mostly of a twisted variety. It was very obvious that her employer really loved Chess, perhaps a little too much, and something did feel off about the whole thing, but at the end of the day, she got paid to clean, and so cleaning was what she would do.

"I see... I'm sure she's okay." — She tried to reassure Tammy of the fact, but her voice was hesitant as always.

"Ow.. ow... it's my turn..." — She darted off, before a black piece would have a chance to move. Of course, it dawned on her during her short flight that she didn't have a plan on where to stop. Thinking on it, she wasn't even sure that a bishop can legally move the direction she was heading.

???

...aaaand then the bishop moved. The game even cheated a bit more than usual, considering that normally a bishop that starts on a white space should never end up on a black space under any circumstances.

Chess Room

A familiar sucking sound filled the room as the tile underneath Karina dropped down into the floor and the vampire maid followed. Another short, disorienting trip later and Karina was once again in the space where she'd started the turn. The light was also still lit above the black clock, indicating that it was still black's turn - but the white clock was the one that was running, draining down the maids' already limited time while the black turn continued.

???

With a flicker and buzz of cathode ray tubes the screen reset, and suddenly the pieces were in the same position as they had been before the bishop's most recent offense.

"Miss Karina!" Jessie yells as she sees the vampire disappear into the floor, but then sighs in relief when she reappears. Tammy looks toward Jessie. "Oh, I've been meaning to ask, Jessie," the cat girl states. "Could you please drop the 'Miss' bit nya? We're not your teachers, babysitters, or even butchers. You can just call us by name, all right nya?"

"Are you sure?" Jessie asks. "My calling you all by 'Miss' is that imposing?" She then looks up and sees the game clock with the black-side turn indicator lit but the white-side timer counting down. "Ah! The clock is... Mi- Karina, Tammy, Junko,... Look!" The ghost exclaims as she points toward the clock display.

"Um... if I remember correctly, if an illegal move occurs, that move is negated and that side must then make a legal move. And, combined with the touch-move rule, if the piece moved has a legal move available, the move must be with that same piece," Jessie explains, then adds, "But as far as the clock goes, the opposing side is supposed to have 2 minutes added as a penalty for the illegal move." The ghost then looks back up the dark hallway the group came from, thinking, Is there really no one else here? I'm sure we didn't close any doors on the way so you'd think someone could hear the occasional giant vacuum racket coming from here...

"Is that right nya?" Tammy asks about the time penalty as she looks up toward the clock, raising her right foot so her right hand can reach to loosen its (nurse uniform) shoe. With a couple of toe taps to further loosen the shoe as well as setting herself up, the cat girl rears back on her space. "If we can't cheat, neither can you nya!" she exclaims with a spin, snapping into a right roundhouse kick that shoots the shoe off toward the clock; But the momentum of the kick's follow-through forces Tammy to step wide with her now-shoeless foot. (Tammy rolls 6 x Athletics 3 = 18 for hurling the shoe via her kick, then rolls 2 x Luck 2 = 4 for whether or not she remains on her space.)

Chess Room

As Tammy stepped off of her square once again the floor (almost predictably, now) fell away beneath her. The catgirl's first trip through the vacuum system was more nauseating than it should have been, given that she was just being moved back one square - or so she thought, until she popped out of a hole in the ceiling and plopped back down by the door.

Even stranger, when the floor came back up again the white rook she'd replaced was nowhere to be seen - and so was the piece she'd taken from the smaller chess board. At some point during her trip it must have come unstuck from her hand. On the bright side, her hair was dry now thanks to the fast moving air in the passage, and the clocks seemed to be working properly again.

???

...aaaaand then the remaining white rook vanished; huh?

"T...T..T..Tammy?" — Karina blinked a few times at the cat-girl. The confusion could be read from her face. — "M...m... You okay?"

Looking around, the others seemed jut as confounded as she was. If this game followed any rules, those were rather strange ones.

Wine Cellar

Ultimately, the idea of waving around burning, dripping improvised torches in an old house filled with hardwood floors seemed just a tad too ill-advised, even by the standards of the Manor of Darkness - after all, they'd have to clean up/put out anything they broke and/or set on fire. Thus, the maids found themselves walking down the dark corridor with only the tiny flame of Berenice's gas lighter to guide them... and then, after about five minutes of walking, that flame went out.

The corridor seems to spiral gently downward. Once they stop screaming/'accidentally' groping each other/randomly throwing explosives, the maids should be able to feel along the walls until they find what seems to be a heavy wooden door. It is unlocked, and on the other side is what appears to be a huge 'display' room filled with chess-themed antiques. The lights are on; is anyone home? Elizabeth can proceed alone if Berenice gets 'lost' in the darkness, temporarily.

"Is it my turn?" — regaining some composure, she looked at Jessie, not really sure about anything on this chessboard by now.

Tammy rubs her backside as she slowly gets back up on her feet. "And after you do that, Junko nya, allow me to shove my other shoe up this twisted guy's-" Jessie quickly interrupts, "As much as we appreciate the sentiment, we still need to get through this first." The ghost then turns toward Karina. "If we're going by official rules, it is still your turn, Miss Karina. But you need to remember that the bishop, which you're representing, can only move diagonally. You can be disqualified after a certain number of illegal moves."

"There's that 'Miss' thing again nya," Tammy says as she stands and, now noticing something (other than her right shoe) missing, begins feeling through her pockets. "Nya? I seem to have lost my chess piece. You think I may have been 'disqualified', since I no longer have it nya?"

"I can't help it, Miss Tammy. My mom taught me from birth to address people accordingly," Jessie says, then adds to herself, Though I've just about forgotten about that last night. The ghost then responds to the 'disqualification' question. "Hmm... I'd say it's possible, given there appears to have been a previous illegal move from your side," she says, glancing at the damaged black knight. "But if that's the case, I'm not sure how you reappeared here. I'm starting to wonder what set of rules are really in place here."
