... would you recommend Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes as a good first Planet Of The Apes movie for us?

I wouldn't. See the original first.

[up] This. There are so many references and in-jokes that will be lost on you if you watch the new film first.

Yeah, and try to avoid any spoilers so that you'll be surprised when it turns out that Charlton Heston was eating people all along.

I disagree actually. While there were more than a few references made to some of the previous movies, my wife went in with this being her first POTA film and thinks it's one of the best movies she's ever seen.

I do think at least seeing the original planet of the apes will enhance the experience of watching Rise, simply from getting the in-jokes, but is by no means required. Especially since this is by all accounts the beginning of a full-series continuity reboot, so there is no way of knowing how closely events will mirror that of the original series.

There are a lot of in jokes and references in the movie but I don't think they really add all that much to it. You're not going to be lost because you haven't seen the others. In other words its sort of the perfect prequel.

So yeah, go ahead and watch it. Just keep in mind that this movie is not like the others. This is a character focused drama, the originals are campy cheesy action movies. The Mark Whalberg abomination removes much of the camp but forgets to add in any meat to replace it and as such its a weak, trite action movie that just happens to have guys in monkey suits.

Unlike most prequels it doesn't spend half it's time trying to set up the events of the original. There are references to certain events, but overall I would say it works better as a stand-alone story rather than setting up the events of the movie.

Although if you're not even aware of the original there are elements that will just leave you hanging, and not in a fun Sequel Hook sort of way.

OP: If you do go see it without watching the original first, could you update us on what you thought about it? I'm curious to see how it turns out for you. :)

[up] Too late. I decided not to, in light of the points in this thread, and my local cinemas are no longer showing it now anyway.

In any case, I assume the Internet has no shortage of people for whom this was their first Planet Of The Apes movie...
