[up] Was referring to Myrmidon. Sorry for the confusion.

Honestly, the story being important or not depends on what the game wants to accomplish. X-Com has no story whatsoever and it's one of the greatest games ever made. Same goes for Doom, or many other games. On the other hand, previously-mentioned Planescape had one of the only actual good stories in a video game, and the combat was atrocious in that. I feel that if a game wishes to devote a large portion of time to it's story, it should be a good one, but if the developers clearly didn't care about the story, I see no reason for it to be important. I, for one, believe that gameplay is such a terrible term. The story can be gameplay, the dialogue can be gameplay, anything that allows the player to interact with the world is in my opinion, gameplay. Considering that most time people refer to it, they refer to the combat system, I honestly think people need to find a different word for what they mean.

Now I'm going off-topic, so i'll shut up now.

I'd say I only find story to be important if we can actually change it or change some of it, and aren't forced to stick to it. Otherwise, it's the least important thing to me if I'm playing a game.

Capitalizing GAMES doesn't make them any more of a game than something you don't like. You've also presented zero cogent arguments for why they are not GAMES.

while obviously looking down their noses at games like Super Mario and Super Metroid, which focus on the things that make them GAMES rather than movies.
This is also a very stupid strawman. I consider FNV, Super Mario, and Metroid to be great to excellent for different reasons, and I'd wager the developers of NV, being high-caliber certified bros, would probably feel the same.

[up][up][up] Oh I see. You're purposely trying to put this person's articles in a negative light by trying to be their embodiment. What genius. What could possibly go wrong?

In any case, I think this topic has been derailed down a bad direction (no thanks to me) so in my opinion, I think it should probably be locked. There doesn't seem to be anymore worthwhile to discuss.

The last thread on icycalm did not end well. I highly doubt this thread will end well either.

Pretty much. Should we get a mod to lock this before more shitstorming happens? I feel my IQ has deteriorated by at least 50 points by my last posts in this, my ability to make coherent reasonable posts even more so.

Indeed. If the shitstorm has not already passed, we are in the eye. Let us bow out and salvage what is left of our dignity.

Aw, all of those posts are edited to nothingness, gone, like tears... in the rain. My curiosity shall never be fulfilled.

I imagine the reason why Icy claims that video games can't have good stories is because "story" is defined (by Merriam-Webster) as "an account of incidents or events" and the word "account" here implies non-interactivity. Hence, "stories in games" is an oxymoron.

So... Modifiable tales in games would be more accurate?

I'm curious if this guy ever played Flower Sun And Rain, and if so, what he thought of its emphasis of art over—and at the expense of—good gameplay. (I hated it, and it sounds like he'd have really hated it, but a lot of people liked it.)

You mean emphasis on story? Icycalm really hated No More Heroes, but for some reason he apparently likes Killer7.

I'd be more tolerant of icycalm's reviews if he didn't pepper then with pretentious crap.

Also I once considered joining his forums for shits and giggles.

Just found it out myself. I'm very glad that it's the way it's now, Insomnia is still there, and the Mindprobe forums are completely separate now. YES.

The funniest thing is that the Mindprobe guys are even more afraid of accepting criticism than Kierkegaard. I'm still too cheap to pay 20 euro to join the Insomnia forums, but at least when Kierkegaard gets criticisms, he demolishes them before insulting the persons giving them. The Mindprobe guys just delete posts and act as if they never existed (they did it in their genre-ranking thread as well). They truly are a poor man's Insomnia.
