Er, no, by all means you can be as snarky at kino as you want, as far as I'm concerned. The guy gives as good as he gets, and is a good example of negas and cocky-and-funny used right. Ain't he a pretty swell guy?

@Jesus Saves: I have no idea what those two terms are, and to be honest, I really don't give a fuck. I already have issues with people who deem it necessary to distill their entire personalty down the 5 tropes, so you can probbaly guess how I feel about PUA archetypes.

I'm really not looking to have my intelligence insulted.

Those individuals need to realize that dating/"getting some" isn't an exact science; sure there are some things which are givens, but you always have to acknowledge the human factor.

We're all different.

@JB: Well considering the fact that my mom is British, you're kind of shooting out of your lane right now. Now go get yourself a bowler hat and you 'might'' be able to get some jail bait.

See what kind of mistakes you make wen you type with your boyfriends cock in your mouth?

[up]See? That's what I'm talking about. I can't make head or tail of your conversation, and if I had been Bungman I'd already be pissed off and giving Kino the silent treatment, but you guys seem to be having fun with each other. I wish I understood people better.

If you have trouble connecting with people and understanding them, laying off the PUA manuals might be to your advantage.

Actually my understanding has improved since I read PUA manuals. That's why I'm so grateful to them and why I see the movement in such a good light.

See, people lie to and about themselves, and are clinically proven to be very bad at knowing what they want and why. PUA manuals have helped me understand what others want and why, both boys and girls, and it was the start of my entering normal society and exiting nerdhood. And ever since I've found out about the Methods Of Rationality and Less Wrong... well, it's even better. But there's still some subtleties I just don't get, and "friendly banter" is one of them.

@Kino: Want me to link you to the relevant explanations? Sorry, I assumed you actually knew about this stuff.

There is no such thing as "clinically proven" when it comes to human behavior. A study may, at best, corroborate a hypothesis, never determine conclusively that people do X because of Y.

I am not saying that you should cease to work on your social skills, just that these methods are disingenuous and oversimplified. Especially if you're being led to think that you understand people's desires on any level but the most general.

Eh, as a scientist I know all about "oversimplified". Believe me, I was very disappointed when we moved from Math to the Real World and the countless approximations we use to... approximate ourselves to understanding it. Reality is forever out of our grasp, and is impossible to truly comprehend. You can only extract some rare general principles that you try to formulate in a language clear enough that people you haven't taught personally can underwstand, and you try to apply them to concrete cases you narrow and reduce as much as you can get away with. *

So, I know that I will never be able to truly understand all the people around me. But there's some stuff I can figure out. I'm like sort of a Rock Lee of dating (are you familiar with Naruto?): I don't have The Gift, but I make up for it with sheer hard work... and that includes gross approximations and quite a few injuries along the way, which I need to take with a smile. I'll just refine them and recalibrate them as new evidence comes in. But in order to get the evidence I have to go out and meet people, and the PUA manuals were the ones that enabled me to do it in the first place!smile Before that, I would never have dared.

And, well, "clinically proven" in this case means "there's overwhelming evidence in favour of this hypothesis". That's good enough for me. BTW, you should totally read that article if you haven't, it is awesome.

I wasn't suggesting that I needed to open your eyes to the faults of overgeneralizations, but that in this case, indeed, there is no rule; and if there are rhyme and reason, thinking that you've got them figured out is setting yourself up for disappointment.

[up]I don't get it. Isn't it what we do anyways?

[up][up]Yup. That was a phase I had for a while. Now I know the rules I know have a limit to what they can predict. No reason not to refine it, though, and, you know, when I said "I don't understand you" I didn't mean it in a "This Cannot Be!" way but in a "amazing! something my theory didn't predict! what a wonderful opportunity to refine it and make it better!"
