There are over SIXTY subdivisions in the music folder. I don't care if there really are that many different subgenres (WTF is Indietronics?) nobody is going to be bothered to look through all of them to find which subgenre their example fits in. Suggest condensing examples into generalised subgenres.

There is also some This Troper. Not a lot, but it's there.

Oh bloody hell. Yes, let's lump these. Keep it simple.

How's this for a division:

  • Rock
  • Metal / Alt-Metal
  • Hip-Hop
  • Electronic
  • Experimental
  • Classical

I didn't write any of that.

Dunno if 'Experimental' Warrants its own folder.

My suggestions:

  • Rock
  • Metal
  • Alternative
  • Indie
  • Pop
  • Hip Hop
  • Classical
  • Folk

Maybe a Vocaloid subheading too. They dont really fit anywhere else.

[up] I will go with this. Really, the uber-specific distinctions are usually Fan Wank / Fan Dumb anyhow, so that they can distance their favorite bands (or the band is doing it themselves) from those in the same genre who aren't "as good," in their opinion.

We don't need 60 subfolders for any page that I can think of...

64. Thats how many I counted, and I may have missed some.

Course, reorganising the subheadings is only part of the problem. The whole section is huge. Some genres easily warrant their own subpage, then there's all the shoehorning and This Troper to tackle. Maybe a special efforts is needed to straighten this out.

Personally I'm not sure if the trope is explicitly supposed to be a last note that's creepy or terrifying, or just any last note that's any switch in tone from the rest of the song. If the former, I'd question if all of the entries are correct.

We need an Electronic subheading as well. If we really didn't want a Vocaloid subheading, we could call them electronic.

And I think Alternative and Indie ought to be lumped together.

I didn't write any of that.

TBH, I use alternative to lump together Electro, Techno, and anything I cant decide what genre it belongs in. This is probably wrong.

Indie is its own genre and people will complain if its not there.

Huh, I think of Alternative as its own genre, and tend to lump unclassifiable stuff under Indie.... Maybe we should just have "Other".

You know, rather than reinventing the wheel, we should probably just use the genre breakdown from the Musicians index.

I didn't write any of that.

Thats still an uncomfortable amount of subgenres.

Hmmm..... Lets just use both subgenres, Alternative and Indie, and see how they're being used.

What would stuff like NIN, Gary Numan, and Placebo fall under?

Which genres do you think are unnecessary? I understand some of the ones from the Musicians index probably don't have any representation on that article, so there's no need to use that particular subheading here.

NIN and Gary Numan should be under Electronic/Industrial. Never heard of Placebo; The Other Wiki says they're Alternative Rock.

As for Alternative vs. Indie, our own Alternative Rock article says that the terms are used synonymously in the UK, and that in the US indie is considered a subgenre of alternative rock.

I didn't write any of that.

Kay, lets add Electronic/industrial to the list.

So it now:

  • Rock
  • Metal
  • Alternative/Indie
  • Electronic/Industrial
  • Pop
  • Hip Hop
  • Folk
  • Classical

Hmmm..... that seems to cover all bases, more or less. Rn B is left out, but can anyone say they've ever heard an Rn B song with a Last Note Nightmare?

We should just have an ' Other' category for the stuff that doesn't go anywhere else, like Vocaloid songs and such.

With Alt vs Indie, yeah, in the UK the definition of both genres is nebulous to say the least. I tend to think of bands like Blur and Pulp as indie. But whatever, lets just stick it in a split category with Alt.

Also, you've never heard of Placebo?

Hmm lets see I would keep the J-Pop/J-Rock entry separate both sides usually have issues when its not.

Vocaloid as well. (I would say stick that in video game but its not that...)

Heh, forgot Japanese music. Okay, lets add J-Pop/J-Rock. That Gackt dude comes up with pretty weird stuff after all.

I dunno about putting Vocaloids in their own specific category. Besides, most of the creepy Vocaloid songs I've come across are creepy all the way through, not Last Note Nightmare.

Jazz. There's some pretty weird jazz out there. I don't have any specific examples, but I bet some of Sun Ra or Frank Zappa's jazz would fit.

Y'know, part of me just has to ask: is this really a trope? And if so, how does it differ from, say Gainax Ending or Mind Screw? Besides being medium-specific?

Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.

It's kinda like High Octane Nightmare Fuel crossed with Scare Chord and stuck at the end of a song. I quite like the page, so I'm in no hurry to start questioning it's tropeworthiness.

Jazz added. list is now:

  • Rock
  • Metal
  • Alternative/Indie
  • Electronic/Industrial
  • Pop
  • Hip Hop
  • Jazz
  • J-Pop/J-Rock
  • Country/Folk
  • Classical
  • Other

Merged Folk with Country (thery're pretty similar, so sticking them in the same folder should be okay) and added 'Other' for the stuff that doesnt fit anywhere else.

We probably shouldn't go over a dozen subheadings if we're trying to keep things condensed. We're at 11 now. Is there anything missing? Apart from Rn B, which I cant think of a single example of this trope for?

Guess what? Those sixty-odd subfolders are still there. We kinda need to fix this. Or I could just nuke the entire music folder and start from scratch.

Does the list In my previous post work?

Good Job. Still a little unweildy, but much better than having 60 goddamn subdivisions. Also, seems there actually are R'n'B examples.

On a side note, I don't even want to know how long that took. You have the patience of God.
