I couldn't handle school, myself. High school was full of other teenagers who were absolutely awful towards me and the whole place had a terrible atmosphere about it. I'm so glad that I'm out of there now.

When you're autistic, it feels like the average person is an asshole. The other kids are mean. The other teens are douchebags. Etc.

[up] This isn't about how I "felt" they were. The people I knew at school were actually assholes. They actively seeked me out to harass me, ziptied my school bag, hid my school bag from me in places where I couldn't find it, and just because they knew it would piss me off said these exact words to me, verbatim: "Tesla's gay!"

You wouldn't catch me dead saying that it was all just how I interpreted it. They, WERE, assholes.

I know. It really sucks how the average person can be so evil. Does this mean that evil and cruelty is average and normal? It should never be accepted.

Well anyway, we should probably get back on track. This thread isn't about me and my personal experiences with school, it's about a bunch of Cloudcuckoolanders with common interests. I don't want to derail this thread.

We hardly tend to actually have common interests though. We're lucky if we do. It makes life a LOT easier.

[up] Heh, I find that somewhat amusing for some reason.

Has anybody else here heard of Autism Speaks? My conception of them is that they're an evil corporation, so this might be a bit of a can of worms.

They're very disliked, for portraying only the worst of autism, Accentuating the Negative, and doing nothing to help the lives of people with autism right now. Instead it's about prevention, feeling bad for the parents (of kids), no mention of adults with autism, etc.

I read that they actually want to "cure" us, which I think is just plain wrong and horrible. I don't trust Autism Speaks at all.

They ignore the existence of the high-functioning for the most part. When they say "cure", they're referring, I assume, to low-functioning, which is their focus. Still, that's just wrong, as most autistics are not low-functioning anyway.

Hey, quick question. Does anybody here think it's a good idea for an aspie to date another aspie?

I think so. You might understand each other more than an Aspie and NT would.

I vaguely recall an article about that, actually. They seemed happy enough together!

One article was written by an NT who said that some of the closest marriages she's seen were between two Aspies. I imagine it's because they actually talk to each other and don't screw around with hidden meanings and assuming the other person can read their mind.

There are books about how to understand an Aspie spouse. One book about how to understand an autistic wife was getting great reviews. One male reviewer said that the book taught him that when his wife says something, she 100% means it, and nothing more or less. How screwed up that NTs don't act that way. A lesbian also praised the book for helping her understand her wife.

Kind of interesting since NT men and women don't understand each other, and a gay man once told me that one advantage to being gay was knowing that you only have to romantically deal with people who are like you. However, even in a lesbian relationship, an NT needed to learn how Aspies think.

[up] Well, hopefully NT people can learn something from that book, too. It would be great if they could learn to understand Aspies and others better.

Yup. They're so used to their way of thinking that any difference, even ones that are positive, is seen as bad. They can't handle someone who thinks very differently, whose mind works very differently.

Would I fit here? Not autistic, but I'm introverted and very much on my own wavelength. I only sound normal online because I have time to think about what I type.

In terms of writing style, I resonate very much with Guillermo Del Toro and Florence And The Machine.

A lot of us sound normal online because we can stop and think about what to type. I was told by an ex-high school classmate that I sound more relaxed online than in person.

However, I have seen autistics who don't even sound normal online.

As a NT person dating an autistic girl, I can absolutely confirm the above. Our relationship is more intimate than anything I had with a fellow NT person before.

Because of how people treat you, or the condition itself?

I've seen Aspies split into two camps - those who think their condition, their way of thinking and so on, is mostly fine and it's society's bigots that have the problem, and those who think autism/Aspergers itself is horrible and would be best off totally gone in general.

The condition. Most people don't know me well enough to notice, but it can make familial relations hard. Also, if you browse Forum Games and are wondering why I'm obsessed with Xion: Hyper-focus.

I've come to the point where I think there are serious things wrong with society in general, and a lot of their dumber, more irrational social rules. (Obviously, some of their rules exist for damn good reasons, but others we would function better without)
