Rick Beaumont: A star athlete in his last year of high school. A freak accident in one of the first football games of the year leaves him with a career ending wound.

Angel Marie Griffith: Head cheerleader and Rick’s on and off girlfriend. Her sexual promiscuity is beginning to catch up with her.

Freedumb of the Press
Jordan Rhodes and Jenna Vazquez: A couple involved in the school’s video and yearbook team. They intend to make a video and yearbook “of the students, by the students for the students.” … By secretly using the school’s materials and budget.

• Rick = Jordan’s drinking buddy.
• Angel = Jenna’s tagalong and gossiping hen in the second half of the story
• Sylvia, Ash, The Freaks and the Geeks = J&J’s ragtag group of Video and Yearbook Staff

Our Lady In Black
Sylvia Cruz◊ An intellectual misfit with a sharp wit and even sharper tongue. Though her vitriolic outlook can put off quite a lot of people, she has an idealistic side shown to few.
Relationships with other characters:

• Rick and Angel = Former friends (Junior high)
• Jordan and Jenna = Employers
• Ash = Stalker?/ Potential love interest?
• Elie and Donovan = Old Friends (drifted apart in 9th grade)
• The Geeks = Intellectual equals?/ Team up with them in school projects for best results
• The Freaks = Closest thing Sylvia has to drinking buddies/ drug contacts

Ultraviolent Lone Wolf
Ash Heredia◊: The school’s eccentric loner. Although soft spoken and shy, the sight and smell of his own blood can often send him into bouts of ultraviolence.
Relationships with other characters:

• Rick = Bully in first half of the story, tagalong in second half
• Sylvia = Crush / Mentor figure
• Elie and Donovan = Respectful towards Ash
• The Freaks = Ralph is Ash’s neighbor.
• The Geeks = Closest thing Ash has to friends.

Minor Characters and subplots:

Donovan Grindheim and Elie Valentine: Two disturbed youths, who bring to school one gray December morn enough guns and explosives to start their own war. This blood bath kills a good number of loved and loathed alike.

Ian and Rosa: The “Boy Meets Girl” storyline gone horribly wrong. What happens when the naïve everyman is completely unfit to handle, let alone escape the affections of his mentally broken girlfriend?

Cesar Mendoza: Rick’s receiver and best friend. Although he’d like to be a better role model for his delinquent little brother Armando, Cesar has his own needs and excesses to attend to.

Armando Mendoza: A belligerent bully and gang member who persistently picks on Ash. Unfortunately for him, Armando is all too dependent on cheap shots, weaponry and numbers to pose a threat on his own.

The Freaks: The school’s resident oddballs, burnouts and misfits. They are:

• Ralph Andrews: The group’s figurehead and friendliest member. Often mistakes Ash for Ash’s older brother.
• Kimberly Kurgan: Ralph’s “girlfriend” and most notorious party animal. Acts affectionate towards anyone that can get her wasted, male or female.
• Zack Romero and Fonzie Moreno/ Thalia Garcia and Cindy Lane: Dynamic duo with the tendency to finish each other’s sentences, insult each other and philosophize inanely. Might be lovers, or cousins, or both.
• The Count: An apparent mute who’s fond of wearing comically sized flannel coats. No one knows his real name. (Hint: It’s Alan)
• Markus Andrews: Ralph’s cousin, a college drop out. Drives a souped up ice cream truck, which he uses to sell drugs and hit on jailbait.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: THESE CHARACTERS NEED SERIOUS DEVELOPMENT

The Geeks◊: Three socially inept students who have come to terms with said social ineptitude. They are:

• Charlie Nguyen: Obnoxious, extroverted and extremely caustic, Charlie seems to take pride in annoying most the people around him.
• Rocio Davila: The group’s most cultured individual. Unfortunately, she’s prone to several (sexual) identity crisises. Her androgynous looks seem to get her a lot of mismatched dates.
• David Mann: Meekest of the three. Never subscribes to any point of view, even his own. This tagalong is the closest thing Ash has to a friend.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: THESE CHARACTERS NEED SERIOUS DEVELOPMENT

Fight Club: Ash's sudden popularity in the second half of the series leads the student body to create a fight club in his honor. This fight club also allows women. As you'd expect, the intentions, and eventually the entirety of said fight club are mutated by its growing participants and members.

Themes and Concepts:

• Solitude vs. Friendship: Aka “The Hedgehog’s Dilemma”. Many of these characters struggle between making friendships at the risk of making themselves vulnerable, and driving people away to avoid being hurt.

• Rebellion vs. Conformity: Some conform out of pragmatism, others for its own sake. Some refuse to conform in order to seek out life’s basic truths. Others again do so for its own sake.

• “A black sheep is still a sheep”: Both double meanings of the phrase are explored. The outsider is still a human being. However, the poseur non-conformist lives his life to oppose the mainstream, never truly having his own will.

• Stoicism Vs. Emotion: Much like “Solitude vs. Friendship”, the characters (Especially Ash and Sylvia) juggle with their own ways of coping/ dealing with the conflicts of their daily lives as soon as they see they won’t always come out on top.

• Individuality/ Misfit Culture vs. the Popular Crowd: A few weeks after the school shooting, the school’s various subcultures and cliques begin to change. Misfit culture is something fear and fascination inducing amongst those in the more popular crowd. Or perhaps, the misfits now outnumber the popular crowd thanks to the massacre. As a result, the appeal of the outsider becomes sought after, to the point of reversing roles and leaving the originally socially awkward with mixed feelings: half thankful, half disgusted. One can’t help but wonder, what is a true individual? What defines a weirdo and outcast when the terms themselves become buzzwords, self-contradictions and catch 22s?
