Did you ever play Syndicate? It was a 3D isometric game for the Amiga. In 1993. They wanted to make it in true 3D, but it just wasn't possible in '93.

Did you read this link? It's actually more reputable since it's actually from inside the studio instead of a person nearby.
Also, just because it's a GTA wannabe doesn't mean it's not going to be an FPS. I could see and FPS GTA working.

In theory, it would be easy to make a GTA-style FPS. Just change the perspective along with a few other things.

The original Syndicate was a 3D isometric game in 1993.

Yes, we are aware. Syndicate was a fantastic game. This will probably go the way of X-Com, though. At least it'll probably be a decent game, although i'm really sick of the franchise obsession hollywood and the video game industry has.
I like how this game isn't even officially announced yet and some people are already calling it shit.

You don't need to clone the viewpoint to clone the style. Syndicate shouldn't be a GTA clone either.

You can't, Go G confirmed it (along with SS) aren't among the games of EA that are coming to its catalog for legal reasons.
Sad that unlike SS, the rights aren't a clusterfuck enough to stop In Name Only sequels, but are to prevent selling it.
