History of the World in Posts, 1 AD to 2011 AD

What is this!?

Simple. It's a forum game in which we post one thing, famous or not, that occurred in the same year AD as our post. This is to enhance the overall historical knowledge of Tropers, and to have fun.

Rules:

• 1. NO double posting.

• 2. Your post must include an event or somesuch that occurred in the same year as your post, but you can also include discussion, just make sure to mark off where the yearly event is.

• 3. If you are ninja'd, then please don't complain, but edit your post accordingly. You can, however, add an annotation, such as, "@Post XX, such and such an event ALSO happened on that date." The big thing here is to have fun, so I don't want anyone missing out!

Mine is post 1, so of course I will start with the year 1 AD.


Did you know that... in this year, the Roman historian Livy's history of Rome (appropriately titled "Ab Urbe Condita, the common Roman dating system) was written?

2 AD: Lucius Caesar dies.

3 A.D.: Marbod, king of the Marcomanni, unifies five German tribes - a gesture that represents a clear threat to Rome in what will become Saxony and Silecia.

4 AD: Mang Wang of Han-era China is given the title of "Superior Duke"... if you know what I mean. He later became the ruler of the short Xin dynasty.

8 AD: After completing Metamorphoses, Ovid begins the Fasti (Festivals), 6 books that detail the first 6 months of the year and provide valuable insights into the Roman Calendar.

9 AD: One more year until double digits. Exciting!

9 A.D The Rhine River is established as the boundary between the Latin and German speaking worlds, following the defeat of the Roman army, under the command of Varus, at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest.

10 A.d The usurper Wang Mang (who rules during a brief interregnum known as the Xin Dynasty) outlaws the private purchase and use of crossbows. Despite this, Liu Xiu, the later Emperor Guangwu of Han, buys crossbows in the winter of 22 in order to aid the rebellion of his brother Liu Yan (styled Bosheng) and Li Tong.

11 AD: Emperor Augustus abandons his plan to create a defensive border at the Elbe, in order to reinforce the Roman defense along the Rhine and the Danube.

16AD: A Roman army of 50,000 men commanded by Germanicus gains a great victory at Idistaviso, defeating the German war chief Arminius and capturing his wife Thusnelda, and recovering the lost eagles of Varus' legions.

17 AD: The ancient city of Sardis in Asia Minor is destroyed by an earthquake. :(

17 AD: Germanicus returns to Rome as conquering hero, he celebrates a triumph for his victories over the Cherusci, Chatti and other German tribes west of the Elbe.

18 AD: Germanicus conclude a peace treaty with Artabanus II of Parthia, in which he is recognized as king and friend of Rome.

20AD: Emperor Tiberius is forced to order an investigation and a public trial in the Roman Senate, for the murder of Germanicus. Fearing he will be found guilty, Gnaeus Calpurnius Piso commits suicide.
