Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Was the public aware of SHIELD though? Pepper certainly didn't seem to know what the hell SHIELD was when she first met Agent Coulson way back in the first Iron Man movie. I can buy that SHIELD has existed in a shadowy capacity for decades, but it seems like it only recently became a huge public thing.
Doesn't Coulson state that SHIELD has just been recently formed, in Iron Man?
Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent.Well, he does say that they've only just started calling themselves by the shortened acronym S.H.I.E.L.D., but he never really says how old the organization is.
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain. He also withholds lots of information. He could've just waited until they were on a need to know basis.
I mean what do you think this is, a fucking free-for-all of facts?!
The sad, REAL American dichotomyOr he could've just lied to Pepper. Considering the ties Stark Industries would have with the government it would've seemed odd to Pepper if there was an arm of the government she wasn't familiar with. Coulson, being the man he is, would've realised this and would've just been like "yeah, we're new on the block. totally legitimate. heres our incredibly long winded name to back us up" The fact that he finally refers his agency by its acronym could actually be seen as a heartwarming moment between himself and Pepper. Before the climax of IM 1 she was just another cog in the machine, afterwards Coulson realises her value and trusts her.
Theres sex and death and human grime in monochrome for one thin dime and at least the trains all run on time but they dont go anywhere.Like I'd said above.
I like how she and he are friends. And hopefully actually friends, not just an act on his part.
Though that could've been SHIELD by a different name, since it obviously grew out of SSI.

The sad, REAL American dichotomy...Remember, in Iron Man 2, Nick Fury says that Howard Stark was a founding member of SHEILD, so they've at least been around since before his death.
Oh, to be more clear, I didn't mean that SHIELD would reduce mutant paranoia in the public, I meant it would reduce mutant paranoia amongst *top political leadership.* Even if SHIELD is secret to the public ( for the moment ), the politicos wouldn't be panicking and tossing out panicked responses, because there *already* is a response organization to deal with it.
Home of CBR Rumbles-in-Exile: rumbles.fr.yuku.comThat didn't stop them from flipping their shit about aliens, though SHIELD was kinda caught with their pants down there.
The sad, REAL American dichotomyYeah, but that wasn't just aliens, that was aliens *actively invading Earth*.

The sad, REAL American dichotomyI wonder if we'll be seeing the specific Iron-Man "Buster" armors in the series. Like maybe the Hulkbuster armor in the next Avengers movie, or studying the Destroyer in the same way S.H.I.E.L.D. did to make Thorbuster armor.
There seems to be a lot less need for them in the movies' continuity, though, and Movieverse Stark seems unlikely to take such a step against Banner - not so sure if he wouldn't do something like that in response to Thor, however. Probably not.
Still, I expect the next Iron Man movie will deal with the newfound alien influence influencing the next step in technology - like reverse engineering the Chitauri machinery littered around New York to create Alienbuster armor (heh). I'm kind of figuring The Mandarin's rings might be another link to Asgard or be based off of the Chitauri technology.
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain. How about Ice Giant Buster armor?
That reminds me... do they still have Loki's staff?
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain....They should have it...
Tony would only build Hulkbuster armor if Bruce left him for Miss Ross.
I want to make "Buster" armor to fight animals hand to hand. And actually intended to fight just them, not just "the same but stronger", Tony.
The sad, REAL American dichotomy...How about Abominationbuster armor?

Norsebuster.
Thor: What is that for?
Tony: ... Loki
Thor: Oh, OK then.
Godbuster. It kills any and all gods with one hit.
That didn't kill Loki with one hit. Plus, when I say any and all gods, I mean any and all gods.

Considering what happened in Avengers, I'd say the first Buster armor would be one designed for space stuff.
Galactus Cosmicbuster, maybe?

The New Age of Awesome is here! Not even the sky is the limit!Actually, if you remember, JARVIS actually mentioned going into space on his first flight in the Mark II (or was it Mark III) armor back in Iron Man. He even discussed how he'd do it. I'd bet that those measures have been implemented for his Mark VIII armor and above.
The problem is, either SHIELD or its precursor organization existed all the way back to WWII. No matter when you set events involving mutants, SHIELD would be relevant, particularly since the very existence of SHIELD would mitigate mutant paranoia ( "We don't need to go killing all the mutants right now, because we've got Super Feds who can handle law enforcement on mutants." ).
