Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Sam Raimi is not working on a fourth Spider-Man movie.

Yet.

That there's a "yet" in there surprises me.

I'd prefer a TASM 3 but I wager it's long odds that we'll see either of them.

Did they really cancel that movie because a producer was pissed off when Andrew Garfield got sick in the middle of an awards show?

Surprising that Sony hasn't capitalized on the nostalgia wave from No Way Home and tried green lighting sequels for Tobey and Andrew, yet made Morbius and Madame Web.

[up] That was PART of it yes. But there were lots of reasons why TASM 3 never happened because of backlash to 2, demand from the fanbase to bring Spider-Man to the MCU, among other reasons according to the emails.

And said producer was the Chairperson of Sony at the time IIRC, Kaz Hirai. Not to justify it or anything but he's a lot higher up in the company than a producer. Still kind of petty tho.

TASM 3 would make a lot of money (if it looked at least half-decent from the marketing and got half-decent marketing). Andrew Garfield is very popular and acclaimed now as both a Spider-Man and an actor in general and the TASM series has been positively re-evaluated and even most people that dislike it think it's So OK, It's Average, with potential. NWH showed that people are interested in that character and his story, hell TASM is considered by many to be the highlight of that film, over even the more popular original and MCU Spider-Mans (though they are still liked in that film as well). They could also capitalise on the current popularity of Emma Stone by having her have a small appearance (vision, flashback, video etc.). I am honestly shocked they haven't announced a new TASM.

[down]Yeah, I didn't really consider that. Still, I think Sony could make a lot of money making a TASM 3 at some point in the future. They could even rebrand it if they wanted to separate it from the divisive TASM series, but still focus on the fact that it's about Garfield's Parker and his trials and tribulations.

I guess it takes time and money to get movies rolling and TASM 3 would be a huge undertaking compared to Madame Web.

I think it also didn't help that the Sony email leak happened and dealt a really huge blow to the company's reputation when everyone could see what they were saying behind closed doors. If you focus solely on the Spider-Man stuff, it was clear Sony really didn't have an idea of where to take the series and some of their plans were... head-tilting. Like, all the lead-up to setting up the Sinister Six only to have them be the heroes and team up with Spider-Man when they went to Savage Land? Using Peter's spider-blood to bring back Gwen?

I think it just convinced people the Amazing continuity wasn't worth sticking around for and Sony folded under the pressure. Granted, the factors mentioned above are also extremely important, but the general public wouldn't have known so much if it wasn't for the leaks.

If you focus solely on the Spider-Man stuff, it was clear Sony really didn't have an idea of where to take the series and some of their plans were... head-tilting.

And the sad part is that they still have no idea what to do with Spider-Man. If anything, Sony's gotten even worse at how to make movies with the IP.

Their general goal of "make movies about the villains as protagonists" to make their own "cinematic universe" has been stepping on rakes at every turn (minus Venom), and their initial plan for Spider-Man 4 basically amounted to "copy-paste No Way Home, but make it BIGGER".

Unlike a lot of people (though it is understandable why they don't), I really like the idea of making a cinematic universe of Marvel villains. It feels like a different way of making a cinematic universe that could be presenting it in a similar way to, say, Universal Horror. It is a strange thing for Sony to do, but I do respect it.

As for the execution, I haven't watched enough of those films to judge, but the concept at least is cool. It seems like a high risk high rewards scenario, though it seems like it isn't paying off.

Like, if the The Mummy (2017) had been better received, then a genuinely good cinematic universe could have been made from the idea of a world where several monsters (or in Sony's case, villains) co-exist.

[up][up] The idea isn't entirely awful, but the problem is that Sony sanitizes the characters so much and has nothing creative behind the helm, so it just becomes a bunch of soulless garbage. Like, it doesn't matter how Bloodier and Gorier you make it, nobody wants to see animal-lover Kraven.

And for the record, I'm talking about Sony themselves, not the actors, writers or directors. The people involved on those fronts seem to be legitimately smart and passionate people, they're just stuck with the Executive Meddling of a company that's decades behind making good superhero movies.

[up][up]Yeah. At least with Venom and Morbius (and Madame Web?, she might be a straight hero, I don't know) they're often anti-heroes so portraying them as such isn't a problem. Kraven, however, is a strange choice. I mean, if you want Spider-Man related anti-heroes, wouldn't Jessica Drew and Black Cat make more sense to do first? If you want an anti-villain (who could become an anti-hero across the film), wouldn't Lizard make more sense, or even Doc Oc or Green Globin, depending on the circumstances for either?

Kraven loves animals like Teddy Roosevelt loved animals

It’s weird to base a movie on though

Hell, there’s enough animal people in the spider rights that you could have had a movie about him hunting one
