Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Clearly Nova should be played by Charlie Sheen.

Samoan Iron Fist would be something that wouldn't bother me.

I still think Steven Strange needs to be Hispanic. It just works.

Why does a hispanic Doctor Strange work better? Please explain.

In the stuff I've seen him in, he looks vaguely Hispanic. It works for me.

I think Strange is pretty much neutral when it comes to ethnicity. So they may as well use him for diversity.

Also, agreeing with the "Iron Fist's actor should actually know Kung-Fu" thing. I'm sure they can find a reasonable martial artist/actor. I think Asian-America would be best for him but with obvious self-awareness as to being an Asian kung-fu guy, although I can see how that might go wrong so I guess American-Not Caucasian is fine for diversity's sake.

[up][up] Use that as an argument for why he could be hispanic if you'd like, but it hardly makes anything resembling a strong case for why he needs to be hispanic or why it "just works".

[up][up]I don't really think my opinion or personal preference needs to have strong evidence behind it.

Don't see anything on wikipedia. Just the usual film is in development and apparently they were considering a one-shot short film but decided that the character was too complicated to cover in a short film.

African king/superhero, that's a collosal dick to foreigners. Not that complicated.

It was also based on the Hudlin run, so it had that working against it, too.

Who is for an adaptation of Shang Chi Master of Kung Fu?

I find this idea preferable to Race Lifting Iron Fist. We already have a Chinese Iron Fist. If we want an Asian star to play the kung fu superhero, there is no reason not to use Shang-Chi.

That's like casting Tony Stark with a black actor so that we can get a black man in an Iron Man suit, or making Mahr-Vell female so we can have a female Captain Marvel. There's a perfectly acceptable character who already fits that criteria standing just off to the left. Use that one.

On the subject of black people (worst topic association ever, I'm sorry), do we know whether or not Falcon and Rhodey turn up in Avengers 2?

Given how many characters the film already has, I wouldn't expect to see much of any component character's supporting cast. Maybe a scene or two, tops.

Given that Avengers 2 is apparently gonna be RDJ's last movie, I can see Rodney as the guy he hands the keys of the Iron Man franchise over to, or even just the token guy-in-robot-armor for future Avengers films.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

No, it's not. While an Iron Man 4 is incredibly unlikely, he's signed a new contract for Avengers 2 and 3.

[up]Which means he's actually only got one more movie left, so I think my theory still works. They beef up his role here so that way when he becomes the legacy guy in Avengers 3 it goes down easier.

I am OK with that. If we were to finish an arc set up in Phase 1 without the originals intact, it would be weird.
